Position Summary
Specialized Learning Supports seeks a full-time, temporary Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) to work with the Autism Support Team. The team provides trans-disciplinary support to school personnel serving Autistic students with diverse learning needs in Grades 1 through 12. The SLPA contributes to the delivery of speech-language services by assisting the SLP Consultants with active modeling, coaching, direct intervention/support and administrative activities. The SLPA works in school classrooms with individual and small groups of students who have Autism and may incorporate strategies with other members of the multidisciplinary team in order to deliver service aimed at supporting all areas of development.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Facilitate the development of communication skills, including language intervention and modelling of AAC, to assist teachers and educational assistants
- Lead individual and small group sessions for targeted skill development to promote language and support AAC usage within the classroom.
- Model strategies to facilitate learning and engagement in class activities such as communication circles
- Engage in communication and hearing screening activities and assist with gathering data for assessments.
- Collaborate with the SLS team and classroom teacher by observing and communicating about the student's behaviour, health status and ability to participate in planned intervention activities
- Coordinate service delivery with the multidisciplinary team to ensure cohesive and integrated supports
Education/Qualifications
- a recognized diploma as a Speech Language Pathology Assistant
- experience working with children diagnosed with Autism and complex needs
- experience with Augmentative and Alternative Communication
- excellent interpersonal skills combined with tact and diplomacy skills
- good organizational, time management and pacing skills to support student scheduling
- flexible, adaptable and able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment certification in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) and First Aid
Rate of Pay
$24.60 per hour plus $194.11 bi-weekly advance on expenses.
After twenty-five (25) cumulative working days, the employee is granted temporary bi-weekly status. The hourly rate increases to $29.44 per hour and the employee is eligible for group benefit plans. This hourly rate of pay reflects a market adjustment granted to Speech Language Pathology Assistants who are required to have a diploma in Speech Language Pathology. This market adjustment and will be reviewed annually in the Fall to determine if it should be maintained, amended or eliminated.
Nature of Work
- this position requires access to a vehicle as travel between sites is required; a bi-weekly advance on expenses is provided
