Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a Senior Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team in Ontario. This is an exciting opportunity to work on complex municipal and industrial infrastructure projects that improve lives and communities across the province and beyond.

Working with an energetic and high-performing team, this position offers a variety of duties and will see you involved in:

  • Data Collection and Analysis: Conduct research using primary and secondary sources; analyze client RFPs, technical specifications, and project requirements to identify key themes and trends aligned with mechanical and piping engineering principles.
  • Technical Developments Recommendation: Identify and recommend improvements to systems, processes, and infrastructure—including design tools and platforms to enhance engineering deliverables, project communication, and user experience.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Manage troubleshooting activities for mechanical systems and equipment; diagnose performance issues in piping systems and experimental setups and develop actionable solutions in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Research: Support targeted objectives within a larger research or engineering program by preparing and validating mechanical and piping system designs, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Personal Capability Building: Develop technical and leadership skills by participating in mentoring, peer reviews, and formal/informal training activities; stay current with evolving engineering practices and regulatory requirements through ongoing professional development.
  • Testing: Create test procedures and standards for validating mechanical designs, stress analyses, and system performance. Oversee QA/QC and peer reviews within the mechanical discipline to ensure consistent quality.
  • Project Management: Lead small- to medium-scale mechanical engineering projects, including budget and schedule development, and maintain progress tracking and reporting to ensure on-time and within-scope delivery.
  • Engineering Drawings: Oversee the creation and review of complex 3D mechanical and piping models and engineering drawings, ensuring compliance with technical and regulatory standards.
  • Equipment Installation: Guide the installation of critical mechanical systems and major equipment rebuilds, ensuring adherence to design specifications and operational performance goals.
  • Process Design Engineering: Analyze hydraulic, transient, and stress conditions to specify methods and equipment required for efficient, reliable mechanical and piping system operation.
  • Engineering Solutions Design: Design and validate engineering solutions to meet functional, safety, aesthetic, and cost objectives, ensuring alignment with both client needs and organizational standards.
  • Installation Monitoring and Control: Monitor system installations, troubleshoot issues in real-time, and implement solutions using appropriate engineering techniques while maintaining safety and compliance.
  • Client & Customer Management (External): Manage communication and collaboration with external clients, vendors, and contractors; maintain technical clarity and ensure expectations are aligned across all stakeholders.
  • Team Leadership and Development: Train and mentor junior engineers and designers, providing technical guidance and performance feedback to build team capability and project readiness.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (e.g., structural, electrical, process, instrumentation, and controls) to achieve shared project goals within budget and schedule constraints.

What you will bring to the team:

  • Bachelor's Degree Electrical Engineering or Equivalent Level
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) is Mandatory.
  • Minimum of 15+ years of experience in instrumentation and control engineering in municipal water/wastewater and industrial projects. (Mandatory)
  • Experience of general supervision of more junior colleagues
  • Proven experience delivering projects for Ontario municipalities such as City of Toronto, York Region, and Halton Region.
  • Strong technical knowledge in:
    • P&IDs and control systems design
    • Industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, Profibus, etc.)
    • Fieldbus architecture and instrumentation communications
    • Process and building automation systems
    • PLC/HMI/SCADA systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Emerson)
    • Control panel layout and fabrication
    • Security, access control, CCTV, and facility monitoring systems
  • Familiarity with Canadian and North American codes and standards.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate deliverables, timelines, and technical quality within multidisciplinary project teams.

Assets (Nice-to-Haves):

  • Experience with programming (IEC 61131-3: Ladder, Function Block, Structured Text), Ignition, Wonderware, or GE iFIX.
  • Exposure to OT/IT network infrastructure, wireless/cellular solutions, and cybersecurity practices.
  • Involvement in HAZOP studies or Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS).
  • Familiarity with design tools such as AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Project experience in transportation infrastructure, social infrastructure, RNG/biogas facilities, and food processing facilities.
