This position is responsible for performing general maintenance and stumping on roads right-of way and parks, woodlands, sports fields, and/or cemeteries, duties may include but not limited to stumping, limb and brush collection, woody debris clean-up, root pruning, mulching, sodding and seeding.
Job Responsibilities:
- Performs duties related to stumping and site restoration on properties including roads, parks and open space areas maintained by the Town; reports any incomplete work or issues to the Lead-hand and/or Supervisor.
- Reading and understanding locates received for stumping location and adhering to proper protocols outlined on locate.
- Prepares ground by hand digging, applying soil, raking and laying sod and/or applying grass seed.
- Root prune and restoration as required.
- Removal of small stumps through hand digging as required.
- Adheres to assigned schedules.
- Completes daily paperwork and work order sign offs
- Act as a flag person on roadways when required.
- Maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, tidy condition, making regular inspections and circle checks, reporting defects, etc. in a prescribed manner.
- Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of duties and the operation of motorized equipment ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Transportation Temporary Conditions for Road Work, standard operating procedures and policies of the Town of Oakville.
- Collects limbs and brush; rakes; perform woody debris and mulch pick-up from roads right-of-way, creeks, woodlands, parks, parking lots, etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of Grade 12 education or acceptable equivalent in education and experience.
- Previous related experience in parks maintenance and related equipment.
- The successful candidate must hold and provide a copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver’s License Class G minimum, DZ preferred (standard and automatic transmission) with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. Note: Applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible for consideration. The successful applicant, who is a new hire, will be required to provide the Corporation with a current drivers abstract (no older than 30 days) and pass a Town administered road test prior to assuming the position.
- Must possess an understanding of the Highway Traffic Act and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, effective communication, both oral and written, customer service and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient time management skills and flexibility in adjusting between a variety of duties.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Preference will be given to candidates having a minimum of 1 year's previous experience with machines and equipment used which may include: trucks, vans, tractors, loaders, chipper, stumper, mowing equipment, small hand equipment.
- Must be willing to work a 40-hour workweek in varying weather conditions and may be required to work a rotating shift, including weekend shifts.
