Your Opportunity:
Reporting to the Unit Manager, the Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) is responsible for the functional supervision and leadership of nursing staff and general support staff on the unit. The AHN is also responsible for the clinical coordination of the inter-professional team. The AHN provides coaching, mentoring, and clinical support around complex decision making. The AHN provides leadership and mentorship to frontline team members to ensure comprehensive and integrated care planning for the provision of effective high quality patient care and flow. The AHN critically assesses, evaluates, and anticipates risks to patient and team safety while promoting the development of clinical practice improvements and supporting the implementation of evidence based practice. As needed, the AHN performs front line Registered Nurse duties as outlines in the Registered Nurse job description. The AHN facilitates individual and inter-professional teamwork and effective work processes including team meetings, huddles, and rounds. The AHN demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The AHN refers serious performance concerns, safety issues, and financial or media risk to the Unit Manager for guidance or resolution and keeps the patient care team apprised of significant events.

The AHN promotes and models leadership competencies by demonstrating good judgement and critical thinking skills, and developing and maintaining strong nursing practice in the designated scope of practice. The AHN fosters team effectiveness, demonstrating excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, communicating effectively and seeking to resolve staff issues. The AHN develops a supportive environment for multidisciplinary learning. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications:
Required Qualifications: Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Alberta (CRPNA) is required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required.
Additional Required Qualifications:
At least one year of recent charge nurse experience required. At least one to two years recent Level 2 or 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) required. Current Neonatal Resuscitation certification required. Must be able to independently provide direct patient care, especially assisting or completing procedures and responding to code situations. Must stand for long periods and walk frequently throughout scheduled shifts. Must have strong interpersonal, stress management and conflict management skills. Must also have strong problem solving and critical thinking skills, as well as excellent assessment, organizational and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
At least one year of recent experience as a member of the NICU Resuscitation Team preferred.
