About us:

West Coast Kids Cancer Foundation (WCK) is a charity that supports families navigating childhood cancer and blood disorders with small actions that make a big impact every day. Our families need food, connection, resources, and mental health support. We help families feel held and heard through family-led programming that eases the burden.

About City Camp:

City Camp is the only day camp in B.C. where kids aged 5-12 / siblings of kids with cancer and blood disorders can join in on all the magic of camp while being able to sleep in their own bed at night. Hosted in close proximity to the hospital and with a medical team on-site, kids on treatment never have to miss out on the camp experience. Childhood cancer and its treatment often have long term effects on a child’s development. Programming at City Camp is tailored to meet the diverse needs and abilities of kids affected by cancer and blood disorders.

Position in a nutshell:

We are looking for a confident, fun-loving, compassionate person to lead our volunteers and children each day of our Spring Break City Camp program.

The Recreation Lead's primary role is to organize and facilitate camp programming. They will work closely with staff to run enjoyable activities that enhance camper development, uphold camp goals, and comply with WCK policies and procedures. They supervise and empower a team of activity leaders to provide a wide variety of fun, safe, and engaging activities.

The Recreation Lead will report directly to WCK’s Connections Coordinator, who will provide supervision and mentoring.

About you:

You are flexible, versatile, and keen to take on a leadership role. You tackle challenges with confidence, creativity, and courage. You are a master facilitator and specialize in programs for kids with complex needs and diverse abilities. You are looking to develop your skills in supervising, leading and facilitating. You are eager to explore new ways of adapting, leading, and organizing camp activities. You have strong abilities in teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and time management. You believe wholeheartedly in the power of connection and play and bring a playful approach to your interactions with kids.

As a valued team member, you will:

  • Supervise the volunteer activity team; offer continuous coaching and support to foster collaboration between volunteers, campers, and staff
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for campers and volunteers, ensuring the continuity of operations and addressing any immediate needs
  • Support the implementation of volunteer orientation and training, with a focus on program facilitation skills
  • Work closely with staff to finalize camp programming and organize activity supplies
  • Lead the volunteer activity team in setting up and facilitating activities
  • Collaborate with staff and volunteers to ensure campers’ safety, health, and hygiene
  • Uphold all health and safety policies as outlined by the WCK medical committee
  • Build positive relationships with all campers rooted in compassion and understanding
  • Help organize, clean, and inventory camp supplies
  • Evaluate camp programming and make recommendations for next year
  • Support camp appreciation activities for campers, volunteers, and staff

Qualifications and experience:

  • Post-secondary education in a related field, such as childhood education, recreation therapy, child life and community health, youth work, or coaching
  • 2+ years of experience developing/facilitating programs for children and supervising volunteers
  • A valid driver's license and access to a personal vehicle
  • are required
  • Demonstrated understanding of child cognitive stages of development and the ability to plan and adapt programming to varied and changing situations, including age levels, group numbers, diversity, etc.
  • Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with individuals at all levels and adapt to ever-changing, intense, and emotional situations
  • Strong ability to work independently and self-start as well as work dynamically in a team
  • A clear Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check
  • Experience working with children with exceptional or complex medical needs is an asset
  • Experience using Google Workspace is an asset
  • Secondary language skills are an asset
