Position: Probationary Firefighter
Classification: Part-Time, Unionized, Leamington Firefighters’ Association
Location: Fire Services
Wage Rate: Certified: Class 4 Firefighter wage of the Schedule ‘A’ Wages of the Leamington Firefighters’ Association Collective Agreement Non-Certified: Probationary Firefighter wage of the Schedule ‘A’ Wages of the Leamington Firefighters’ Association Collective Agreement
Hours of Work: Seven (7) Twenty-Four (24) hour days on call during duty weeks
Reports To: Captains

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must maintain residency within four (4) kilometres and be employed within six (6) kilometres of the Fire Station. Applicants must comply with this requirement within thirty (30) days of hire and must maintain it through the duration of employment with the Municipality.
    • Must receive permission from employer to respond to emergencies and have a reliable means of transportation to respond to alarms.
  • Must have or be working towards successfully completing the NFPA 1001 Firefighters 1, 2 and NFPA 1072/472 Certification. Certification must be completed within two (2) years of hire.
  • Must have or be working towards successfully obtaining a valid Ontario Class ‘DZ’ Driver’s Licence. ‘DZ” Licence must be obtained within two (2) years of hire.
  • Must be certified in Current First Aid, CPR and AED.
  • Must maintain satisfactory performance evaluations over the probationary period, at six (6) months and one (1) year from hire.
  • Pleasure Craft Operators Certificate is an asset.
  • Previous firefighting experience is an asset.
  • Previous related experience (i.e. EMS, Police) is an asset.
  • Previous pertinent training (i.e. Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, Ontario Health & Safety Act) is an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment (i.e. volunteer service) is an asset.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills is an asset.

Job Description:

Reporting to the Fire Services Captains, the Probationary Firefighter works as part of a team to provide limited or restricted duties related to emergency response, public education, equipment checks and associated maintenance while maintaining skills, knowledge and certification competencies through department training programs.

Specific Duties:

In addition to adhering to the requirements of Article 22 of the Collective Agreement, a Probationary Firefighter shall also:
  • Participate in regularly scheduled in-person and online training sessions.
  • Perform firefighting duties according to applicable legislation, standards, and Fire Services Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Lay, connect and carry fire hose, hold nozzles, direct high-pressure water streams, and work from varying heights of ladders and roofs.
  • Operate all equipment normally associated with efficient operations to control and extinguish fires.
  • Wear Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and full protective clothing in noxious and smoke-filled atmospheres in a supervised environment.
  • Ventilate buildings or areas to release heat, smoke or fumes.
  • Carry out salvage operations to minimize property damage.
  • Perform overhaul operations to ensure the fire has been completely extinguished.
  • Perform various inspection and maintenance duties to apparatus, equipment and other department property, completing associated documentation, as assigned.
  • Participate in public relations and fire prevention projects, such as tours, parades and demonstrations as required.
  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and the Municipality of Leamington’s Health and Safety Program.
  • Assist with various special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

The compensation for Part-Time Probationary Firefighters is as follows:
  • Annual Salary: $13,374.98
  • Standby Pay: $3,276 per year
After completing one year as a Part-Time Probationary Firefighter, the compensation for a Part-Time Class IV Firefighter is as follows:
  • Annual Salary: $16,343.70
  • Standby Pay: $3,276 per year
