ENGINEERING INSPECTOR 2 POSITION OVERVIEW:

Join the City of Maple Ridge as a key player in shaping our growing community’s infrastructure! In this Engineering Inspector 2 role, you’ll take on a dynamic mix of administrative, regulatory, and technical responsibilities and overseeing the construction and inspection of both developer-related and capital works projects. You’ll play a vital part in ensuring that all projects meet design specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements while maintaining the City’s commitment to quality, safety, and innovation in public infrastructure.This position offers the opportunity to work independently and make decisions in the field—conducting inspections, identifying potential issues, and collaborating with developers, contractors, and utility companies. You’ll also contribute to the success of major municipal projects by preparing cost estimates, technical reports, and project designs. As a trusted representative of the City, you’ll engage the public and internal teams to resolve issues. In This Role You Will:Review construction drawings and plans for new subdivisions and municipal projects for technical accuracy and compliance with design criteria, construction specifications, bylaws, and guidelines.

Conduct inspections of roads, sewers, waterworks, and other public infrastructure projects to ensure safety, quality, and adherence to approved standards.

Identify potential safety hazards, deficiencies, or substandard workmanship and ensure timely resolution.

Research, develop, schedule, and administer municipal construction projects, including roads, drainage, water, and sanitary sewer systems.

Prepare tender documents, cost estimates, technical reports, and project recommendations.

Process contractor payments and progress reports; coordinate testing of construction materials.

Monitor and oversee the work of municipal crews, contractors, and utility companies to ensure compliance with municipal and provincial safety requirements.

Respond to public inquiries and complaints, providing clear explanations of municipal policies and facilitating resolutions.

Consult and coordinate with consultants, contractors, and internal departments to ensure project success. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESMust have above average Public Relations skills and have the ability to deal effectively and tactfully with the general public and contractors under conditions of stress and adversity.

Considerable knowledge of Municipal design and engineering standards relative to all aspects of land servicing and of the rules, regulations, by-laws and policies pertaining thereto.

Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in construction and installation of Municipal utilities.

Sound knowledge of engineering mathematics, and of Municipal engineering plans, specifications, contract documents and data related to the work.

Sound knowledge of computer applications and capabilities as related to the work performed.

Working knowledge of the fundamentals of budgeting and standard costing procedures as related to engineering programs and operations.

Ability to research, develop, schedule and administer specific Municipal construction projects, to prepare cost estimates, and to assist a superior in the compilation of the preliminary annual and long range program budgets.

Ability to assist with tender preparations for specific capital works and to review drawings and plans for technical accuracy and conformance to Municipal and other agency guidelines, by-laws and specifications.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of internal and external contacts and to provide technical information, advice and interpretation of engineering requirements, policies, procedures, proposals and related matters to same.

Ability to deal effectively through verbal and written communication regarding public complaints and requests.

Ability to prepare and maintain records, statistics, reports and correspondence related to the work.

Must have the ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing.

Must have the knowledge to determine quality of materials and workmanship, make accurate notes and sketches and prepare observation reports of work accomplished.

Should have prior experience and knowledge of W.C.B. and Provincial safety regulations. REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCEGraduation from a diploma program from an Institute of Technology in an appropriate discipline plus sound related Municipal engineering experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. REQUIRED LICENCES, CERTIFICATES AND REGISTRATIONSCertification or eligibility for certification as a Certified Public Works Inspector Level II (CPWI 2) with the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia.Valid Class 5 Driver’s License valid in the Province of British Columbia. HOURS OF WORK

As per Schedule B Note C of the Collective Agreement, this position will work a 40-hour work week and shall be paid for the hours worked.
