Over the past 35 years, C-FER Technologies has advanced the safety, environmental performance and efficiency of technologies and operations around the world. C-FER’s unique test capabilities are used to evaluate and de-risk novel technologies under the most challenging real-world applications and/ or assess the integrity and optimal operation of existing equipment with complex tests. Our research spans a broad range of projects that include full-scale testing under complex loading and environmental conditions, advanced simulation and modelling, as well as on-site field monitoring services. Our key clients include many of the world’s major oil and gas companies, major pipeline transmission companies, and the companies that supply materials and technology to these industries.
We are currently recruiting for an enthusiastic and highly motivated full-time Junior Researcher (Engineer in Training). This position will work fully on-site at either of C-FER’s two Edmonton locations but will be primarily based out of C-FER’s East facility in Edmonton at 3712 Roper Road. The Junior Researcher (Engineer-in-Training) will report to the Structures Department Manager and will have a wide range of duties.
What You’ll Do:
These will typically focus on the design and analysis of full-scale tests under combined and complex loading and extreme environmental conditions. The candidate will support a team of engineers and technologists by contributing to applied research and consulting projects involving the design, analysis, testing and evaluation of various pipeline, structural, leak detection and spill response technologies and the generation of proposals and cost-estimates for clients.
You will:
- Prepare test plans and develop detailed test procedures to evaluate client products and materials according to test specifications.
- Develop test fixtures and prepare specimens to interface to lab equipment such as load frames and test automation platforms.
- Execute test programs based on test plans and procedures.
- Evaluate test results and project findings through data analysis.

- Exceptional technical problem-solver with a solid mechanical aptitude;
- Mature, creative, resourceful, and adaptable problem solver; and
- Motivated and goal-oriented with a strong work ethic and drive for continuous learning.
What You Should Bring:
The ideal candidate will have an Engineering Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering (an applicant with a post graduate degree (e.g. Master’s or PhD) will be considered.
Additionally, you should have:
- Experience in 3D modelling and creating engineering drawings;
- Knowledge of and experience working with hand-tools and mechanical equipment;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills;
- Able to build long-term relationships with colleagues, clients and other stakeholders;
- APEGA registration (i.e. an EIT seeking to become a PEng); and
- Ability to travel and work outside of Canada and to legally work in Canada for C-FER.
Complementary Experience:
- Pipeline industry, specifically pipeline integrity;
- Mechanical/structural design and research;
- Experimental or testing role; and/or
- Project management.
