PRODUCERS, As It Happens
CBC News is hiring two Producers for As It Happens, the flagship evening radio current affairs program. These are two temporary roles, 15 months each, one starting in January 2026, the other in March 2026. These positions are full time, and both are based in Toronto.
The Program
As It Happens is a daily current affairs program that covers the top news of the day in Canada and around the world by interviewing people at the heart of the story. The program is also known for its conversations with unique, curious and sometimes quirky characters. The two hosts employ a wide range of tones and formats to explore the issues that are most relevant to our audiences. As It Happens airs on the radio across Canada, and on over 100 stations in the US. It is also a popular podcast and produces digital stories.
Your Role
Working under the direction and supervision of the Executive Producer, you are an experienced journalist who thrives in a fast-paced environment, with exceptional critical thinking skills, and a proven passion for news and current affairs programming.
You demonstrate a clear understanding of the program’s mission through your pitches, and stop at nothing to find and book the best guest who is at the centre of the story.
You are a strong communicator, expert at writing introductions and a q-line that delivers what the audience needs to know in a 6-8 minute interview.
You are adept at editing interviews, and are able to collect, edit and incorporate sound elements into your item to enhance the storytelling.
You are comfortable working in a fast-paced, high pressure environment, and can pivot quickly if breaking news demands it.
You are an independent thinker and self-motivated, but you also thrive on collaboration, and are a team player.
You are familiar with, and adhere to, the CBC’s journalistic standards and practices.
You have a deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience, which is reflected in the stories you pitch and produce.

Key Tasks
- Pitches, chases, and produces interviews daily
- Gathers research, writes intros and q-lines
- Produces interview in the studio and edits segment for length, clarity
- Sources and edits additional sound elements to enhance interview
- Responds to breaking news, booking guests and writing scripts quickly
- Works cooperatively and collaboratively with studio crew, hosts, producers, and senior leadership
- Mentors junior staff
- Ensures segments reflect the diversity of our audiences in contemporary Canada.
- Is familiar with, and adheres to our JSP in all elements of programming
- A college or university degree - journalism preferred.
- A minimum five years of practical and relevant experience in journalism, including broadcast environments.
- A keen interest and ongoing expertise in news and current events.
- A proven ability to work effectively to multiple deadlines along with excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- A strong sense of creativity, initiative, and a high degree of responsibility for the accuracy and quality of work.
- Impeccable critical thinking skills, incisive, decisive and curious.
- Lived experience that enhances your knowledge and understanding of the people, regions, and cultures of Canada.
- An ability to work various shifts, and overtime as required.
