The Data Analyst is a subject matter expert that helps guide businesses on products, and services through advanced analytical methods. The role can translate complex problems into plain language to ensure key stakeholders have the data and the insights to make informed business decisions.
This position researches and applies knowledge of existing and emerging data principles, theories, and techniques to transform high level business requirements into measurable solutions for business partners.
Provides insights and analysis into strategy and initiative work to grow the business, the use of data will be foundational to making informed decisions and measuring success.
Responsible for performing general analytics and/or statistical modeling on existing data sets in various areas of the business. Activities include defining data requirements, data collection, processing, cleaning, analysis, modelling, and visualization.
BI function: Blends historical data from available industry reports or purchased sources or internal analysis as input to analyses. Identifies and analyzes industry/geographic trends and competitor market strategies and monitors current/potential trends. Partners with other areas of the business to model the outcome of implementing potential business strategies.

What you will do:
- Provide insights and analysis into strategy and initiative work to grow the business, the use of data will be foundational to making informed decisions and measuring success.
- Build insights: complete data analysis and discovery to better understand the data and the story it is telling to drive actionable results.
- Identify business problems, that if remedied, will return significant commercial value (either through increased sales, reduced cost, or lower risk)
- Delineate, with specificity, the underlying root causes and contributors causing the business problem through quantitative/fact-based analyses.
- Formulate remedies and prescribe exactly how they will fix the business problems, and quantify the dollar impact and non-dollar benefits
- Provide visualization for making recommendations on trends, that would identify areas for increased sales, measure productivity, reduced cost, or lower risk.
- Work with large data sets and retrieve data from systems using multiple languages on various platforms.
- Develop, customize, and maintain data models.
- Support data solution teams in data extraction and preparation from multiple sources modelling the data for use for Advanced Analytics and business dashboards]
- Logical and physical data modeling of data to align with Business Intelligence/Advanced Analytics initiatives and Canada Life modelling standards for meta data, and the management of the data models using modeling tools.
- Define and manage application security setup including access audit and access clean-up.
- Bachelor’s degree in related field of study, or an equivalent combination of bachelor’s degree and extensive related work experience
- Strong experience in working with data visualization tools (SQL, SAS, Cognos, Tableau, Microsoft Azure, Power BI)
- Deep business knowledge, to be able to understand and analyze the data to solve for business problems where the return can include significant value (savings, lower risk)
- Excellent written and oral communication including ability to communicate with users with various technical backgrounds; guide stakeholders on how to process, analyze and visualize data.
- Communicates insights and translates complex data into common language. Influencing on what the data story is telling. Ability to influence Sr. Leadership and key stakeholders.
- Innovative and visionary thinking; willingness to bring forward new concepts and approaches.
- Drive optimizations to improve data quality.
- Understand and champion new tools and technologies.
- Assist the business in the ideation of new analytics initiatives ranging from descriptive, diagnostics, predictive to prescriptive.
- Be a trusted advisor to stakeholders and internal clients to solve complex data challenges for their business needs.
- Strong understanding of database query languages and substantial knowledge in analytical approaches.
- Expertise with data mining and visualization techniques, ability to apply context to data, and strong ability to communicate the data.
- Knowledge of data modeling, data access, and data storage techniques.
