ROLE SUMMARY:

The West Brewery Controller is responsible for accurately recording and reporting the financial results of the supply function at Edmonton and Creston sites. This role ensures the integrity of financial data, supports cost-related targets, and acts as the primary point of contact for ATR, Reporting & Supply finance matters for the West Breweries.

The ideal candidate brings strong accounting expertise, experience in manufacturing or supply environments, and excels at collaborating with both finance and operational teams.

JOB RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Responsible for financial activities and results for supply operations, with a specific focus on Edmonton and Creston sites.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for ATR, Reporting & Supply finance matters.
  • Ensure the accuracy of the income statement and balance sheet items pertaining to the supply business units, including co-packers.
  • Provide financial visibility to support cost-related targets and decision making.
  • Support the analysis and explanation of performance variances against the budget, with a focus on variable industrial costs, fixed industrial costs, and supply chain losses. Provide guidance to supply leaders throughout the post-close cycle.
  • Support the preparation of the budget for Canada supply (excluding central overheads) and assist in developing plans and executing actions to help achieve cost-related targets.
  • Lead or assist in other financial related activities relevant to Canada supply as required.

BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT & MAIN CHALLENGES:

  • Month End Close: Plan and execute the month-end close process for variable and fixed costs, ensuring transactions are accurately recorded and properly allocated. Collaborate with regional supply teams to review costs and financial positioning. Manage stakeholder expectations regarding the timing and methodology of cost recognition. Manage multiple sub-processes within the overall month-end close process. Given the compressed two-and-a-half-day timeline, this role requires extended hours during this period to review financial data for accuracy.
  • Inventory Control: Strong inventory control is critical to an accurate month-end close, with inventory analysts at each site responsible for managing this process. Consistent follow-ups and reminders are necessary to ensure timely completion of required inventory MICs, helping to meet financial reporting requirements and maintain data integrity.
  • Financial Knowledge of Key Contacts: Business stakeholders are operationally focused and may not have prior financial experience. Clear and simple communication is essential to ensure their understanding of key financial processes. Regular training sessions on routine financial activities such as GRIR (Goods Receipt/Invoice Receipt), inventory management, and accruals are often required to help them fulfill their responsibilities accurately and efficiently.

Internal: Brewery General Manager, Planning & Performance Managers, Site Department Heads, Inventory Management Team, and Reporting & Control Team

External: CRA, City Financial Department

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or related field.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience. Certified Professional Accounting (CPA) preferred.
  • Strong ownership and accountability. Ability to work within tight reporting deadlines. Resilience to work in high-pressure environments. Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Self-motivated and proactive.
  • Thorough knowledge of Canadian GAAP & IFRS.
  • Solid accounting fundamentals.
  • Understanding of the beer industry, including production and distribution.
  • Proficiency in SAP Financial systems.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Experience with Power BI.
  • Familiarity with back-office financial tools.
  • Languages: English (required)
