The Vice President, Medical Group President provides executive leadership for the employed physician enterprise within Mary Washington Healthcare. Reporting to the Chief Ambulatory Operations Officer and the Chief Hospital Operations Officer, this leader is responsible for the strategic and operational direction of the Medical Group — encompassing approximately 500 employed physicians and advanced practice providers across 80 practice sites.

The Medical Group President ensures the Medical Group operates as an integrated, high-performing component of the health system’s care delivery model. In partnership with the senior medical directors, the Vice President leads efforts to strengthen physician practice management, optimize access, improve patient experience, and ensure financial sustainability.

This leader is accountable for driving operational excellence, physician engagement, and alignment across the Medical Group, facilitating seamless integration of practices into a coordinated, value-based, and financially sound ambulatory care network.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the physician enterprise, ensuring alignment with systemwide goals for access, quality, and financial performance.
  • Provide executive leadership and strategic oversight for all operations within the Medical Group, including practice management, staffing, scheduling, and operational performance.
  • Partner with senior medical directors in a dyad leadership model to support physician engagement, quality outcomes, and coordinated care delivery.
  • Oversee the business and operational performance of all physician services, including budgeting, financial management, staffing structures, and performance improvement.
  • Lead initiatives that integrate practices and service lines into a unified, patient-centered and value-driven healthcare network.
  • Drive growth of the Medical Group through strategic service line development, new practice integration, and development of new access points.
  • Partner with HR and physician leadership to design and implement effective provider recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Oversee provider compensation structures including incentive pay, ensuring they are equitable, market-competitive, compliant with regulatory requirements, and aligned with performance and organizational goals.
  • Conduct regular compensation analyses and recommend adjustments to maintain internal equity and external competitiveness.
  • Collaborate with Finance, HR, IT, and other system leaders to ensure alignment of infrastructure, workforce, and technology with strategic priorities.
  • Implement operational standards, metrics, and reporting systems that promote accountability, efficiency, and sustainability.
  • Establish and monitor operational metrics and performance standards to drive accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence throughout the Medical Group.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and safety standards.
  • Develop and mentor physician practice leaders and management teams to strengthen leadership capability and promote professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Public Health, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in physician enterprise management, ambulatory operations, or a comparable healthcare leadership role within a health system.
  • Demonstrated success leading multi-specialty medical group operations, including financial and strategic management.
  • Proven ability to lead collaboratively in a dyad structure with clinical leadership.
  • Strong financial, operational, and strategic acumen with a track record of improving performance outcomes.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and team leadership skills.
  • Commitment to innovation, patient-centered care, and organizational excellence.
