Title Deputy Fire Chief – Operations and Support Job Status Regular Full Time Position Overview

Public Safety is looking for a results-oriented, proven operational and people leader to join the Fire Department as Deputy Fire Chief, Operations and Support.
Responsibilities
This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing the day to day operations of the Fire Department and oversees, organizes and directs all aspects of the Fire Suppression, Training and the Mechanical/Fleet Divisions for the City of North Vancouver.
The Deputy Chief participates in the preparation, implementation and evaluation of departmental standards, policies, procedures, regulations, general operating guidelines, and program objectives. Further responsibilities involve providing administrative and technical advice to the Fire Chief; participating in recruitment of fire personnel, staff evaluation, collective agreement administration and negotiation. The Deputy Chief represents the City as part of the management team both internally and with external stakeholders; assists with the preparation and administration of the Fire Department budgets; attends emergency incidents to direct strategic operations and ensures that all programs and activities follow safety guidelines. They also act as Fire Chief; assuming the role of Fire Chief during absences.
Requirements
The successful candidate will bring advanced fire-service qualifications and formal leadership education and training including senior-level NFPA certifications (such as Fire Officer and Fire Instructor), strong incident command capability, and relevant experience in fire service leadership, emergency management, and public administration. Strong leadership skills with the ability to build and lead a collaborative and effective team, proven problem-solving and people skills and experience in implementing industry best practices are essential. Experience with the effective direction of strategic fire ground activities including the analysis and control of complex emergency incidents and knowledge of the relevant Codes, Acts, Regulations and By-Laws is required. A valid Class 3 BC driver’s license is required.
During the recruitment process, applicants will be requested to provide a current Police Information Check (PIC).
Compensation
We offer an attractive remuneration and benefits package for this exempt position and the salary range is $154,956 – $181,164 annually (2024 rates).
Hours of Work
This position works a compressed work schedule of five days per week with one scheduled day off each three week scheduling cycle.
