Adult Outdoor Program Coordinator / Trip Leader / Volunteer (Multiple Positions)

Western Educational Adventures (WEA) is growing our Adult Social Adventure Program and we’re looking for new team members. Our program offers adults the chance to get outside, meet new people, and build real social connections through outdoor adventures and skill-based activities.

We are hiring for three different roles depending on experience and interest:

1. Program Coordinator (paid)
2. Trip Leader (paid)
3. Volunteer Trip Leader / Event Assistant (volunteer)

We are open to experienced outdoor leaders as well as organized, reliable people who are willing to learn, ask questions, and grow into the role.

About the Program

Our adult program currently includes:

  • Day hikes
  • Outdoor skills workshops
  • Kayaking and canoeing
  • Ski and snowshoe trips
  • Multi-day expeditions
  • Social and community-building events

Most activities take place on evenings and weekends.

1. Program Coordinator (Paid Role)

Summary: Helps run and grow the adult program by planning, organizing, and occasionally leading events.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and organize hikes, workshops, paddling outings, and other adventures
  • Lead or co-lead events depending on qualifications
  • Coordinate Trip Leaders and volunteers
  • Communicate with participants and manage logistics
  • Follow safety and risk-management practices
  • Complete basic admin tasks and reports
  • Ask questions and learn the role with support when needed

Pay:

  • $20–$35/hr for admin, planning, and short programs
  • $150.75–$325/day for full-day or overnight programs

Hours: 5–10 hours per week to start, with the chance to grow into a full-time role.

2. Trip Leader (Paid Role)

Summary: Leads outdoor events within their qualifications and assists with program prep.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead day hikes and skill-based workshops
  • Support the Coordinator with planning and logistics
  • Prepare and clean program equipment
  • Follow safety procedures and provide first aid when required
  • Attend training and follow WEA program standards

Pay:

  • $20–$35/hr for admin and prep
  • $150.75–$325/day for programs

Hours: Casual / as needed.

3. Volunteer Trip Leader / Event Assistant (Volunteer Role)

Summary: Supports planning and running events, and may work toward paid roles.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with event prep and logistics
  • Co-lead activities depending on qualifications
  • Learn new skills with guidance
  • Support the Coordinator and Trip Leaders
  • Help with equipment, cleanup, and basic tasks

Benefits:

  • Some certifications reimbursed after minimum volunteer hours
  • Opportunities to move into paid roles
  • Free access to many WEA programs

Qualifications (All Roles)

We welcome people who are experienced or willing to learn. We are happy to train the right person.

Minimum for all applicants:

  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Reliable and comfortable asking questions when learning
  • Enjoy working with people and being outdoors
  • Able to pass a vulnerable sector criminal record check

Paid positions (Coordinator & Trip Leader) require:

  • Standard First Aid (Wilderness First Aid preferred)
  • CPR-C
  • FoodSafe Level 1 (or willingness to obtain)
  • Class 4 licence for Coordinator (or willingness to obtain)

Preferred for any level (not required):

  • Wilderness First Aid (40-80 hr)
  • Bronze Cross / NLS
  • Kayak or canoe certifications
  • Outdoor leadership experience

Applicants missing some qualifications can still apply if they are willing to obtain them.

Availability

  • Evenings and weekends required for most events
  • Coordinator: 5–10 hrs/week
  • Trip Leader: casual/as needed
  • Volunteer: casual/flexible
