Kinder Theatre Camp is an introduction to the performing arts for younger campers. Each day they will learn songs, dances, and lines for a play specifically written for their age group. The days are rounded out with games, crafts, and other activities. Kinder Theatre Camp has a performance on Friday afternoon, during regular camp hours. Supervisors in this program require a background in the performing arts experience working with young children and managing staff or volunteers.
Perform for the Big Screen is designed to gain experience in both performance and creative skills in the Performing Arts, TV and film. This camp explores various screen acting techniques including scene work, character development, choreography and singing. Campers collaborate to create a filmed showcase to be presented on the prestigious stage of the Flato Markham Theatre. This camp is designed and implemented by professional performing artists in the industry. Supervisors in this program require a background in the performing arts or TV/Film and experience working with young children and managing staff or volunteers
All March Break camps are one-week in length.
Job Description
Supervises a group of campers and counsellors in one of the Flato Markham Theatre’s Performing Arts Camps with responsibilities including facilitating activity plans, supporting program delivery, supervising counsellors and volunteers and some light administration.
Through effective leadership and programming, enables children and youth to develop skills, make friends, socialize and build self-esteem. Accountable for the well-being of a group of campers under the guidance of the Camp Coordinator, Artistic Director and Director Team, ensuring camp activities are safe, educational, inclusive, high quality and meet the Theatre’s overall goals and standards.
A selection of Camp Supervisors will primarily focus on camp administration and will work directly with the Camp Coordinator. Those interested in this position will be assigned to supervise Before and After Extended Care Hours and camp programs as needed.

- Applicants must be available for in person training on Sunday March 8 th

Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Supports program delivery in various performing arts disciplines including dance, music, and drama
- Supports inclusive programming by ensuring program adaptations are considerate of camper needs, health and safety and City of Markham Camp policies and procedures
- Prioritizes child well-being, safety and protection throughout the camp. Evaluates situations for potential risks to the safety, protection and well-being of campers and staff, pro-actively taking mitigating actions to address such risks
- Responsible for attendance records as well as leading the sign-in and sign-out process for their individual camp and reporting absentee campers to the Camp Director Team
- Follows-up with any incomplete information documented on camper information forms. Disseminates pertinent information (e.g. allergies) to camp counsellors directly over seeing that camper in a timely manner
- Ensures supervision of campers at all times to provide a safe and enjoyable experience by being mindful of camp attendance, ratios, and by adhering to City of Markham Camp policies and procedures
- Work with team of Camp Supervisors and Counsellors as well as Director Team to effectively and in a timely manner communicate in regards to all aspects related to facilities, staffing, participants, equipment, supplies or anything that would impact the quality and safe delivery of day to day operations
- Organizes and assists with set-up and clean-up of camp events, activities and programs. Ensures campers and camp staff leave the Theatre as they found it, controls supplies and equipment inventory making sure all materials are kept in good working order
- Serves as a liaison with parents of campers, reinforcing City of Markham customer service, diversity and inclusion (special needs, ethno-cultural, English as second language, socio-economic)
- Acts as a leader and role model, fostering a positive learning environment where people feel included as members of a team and are motivated to work towards common goals
- Provides regular updates and feedback to the Director Team
- Participates in orientation and training sessions, supporting the Director Team and Discovery Program Coordinator where necessary. Supervisors may be required to develop team training for their assigned programs and counsellors/volunteers
- Assists with the on-going training, coaching and recognition of volunteers. Provides regular feedback and completes formal performance assessments for all direct reports as required
- Responsible for and participates in before and after care program hours as required
- Reports all incidents promptly and accurately to the Discovery Programs Coordinator using incident report forms and processes
- Maintains and reviews camp documentation, including camper information forms, permission and waiver forms, attendance records, incident reports, etc….
- Other duties as required.
- Minimum 18 years of age or older at start of employment
- Currently enrolled in, a post-secondary institution in Theatre Studies, education or related field is an asset. Training related to performing arts (drama, dance, music) is required.
- Previous camp experience demonstrating leadership capabilities.
- Experience in program planning/delivery and knowledge of child development. Confident in teaching various ages and skill levels.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills required
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, etc…)
- CLASS applications are an asset
- Current Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ required
- HIGH FIVE certificate in Principles of Healthy Child Development is required
- HIGH FIVE Quest 2 is an asset
