Reporting to the Supervisor of Environmental Planning & Governance, the Senior Environmental Advisor will play a pivotal role in advancing ATCO’s Environmental Management Program. This position combines strategic leadership, technical expertise, and collaborative problem-solving to ensure regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across Natural Gas operations.

As an advisor, you will lead initiatives to prevent, manage, and mitigate environmental impacts while driving innovative solutions to emerging challenges that focus on an aligned utility approach. You will work closely with engineering, construction, and operations teams, as well as internal stakeholders across ATCO Energy Systems and EnPower to align environmental practices with corporate objectives and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing compliance for operating projects, managing environmental audits and incident reporting, and supporting the development and enhancement of ATCO’s Environmental Management System.
  • Subject matter areas include wildlife, vegetation, soils, aquatics, wetlands, and spill and incident management.
  • Develop strategies and actionable plans to address emerging environmental issues and risks, collaborating with a cross-functional team of internal stakeholders to ensure alignment and effective implementation.
  • Work collaboratively on the development, implementation, and continuous enhancement of ATCO’s Environmental Management System by analyzing operational data and stakeholder feedback to identify lessons learned and drive strategic improvement initiatives.
  • Engage with departments such as Government Relations, Finance, Field Operations, Environmental Permitting, and Construction to advance environmental initiatives.
  • Monitor and interpret evolving environmental legislation and regulatory requirements, ensuring timely integration into company policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical leadership in environmental risk assessments, offering strategic recommendations to minimize operational impacts and regulatory exposure.
  • Lead cross-functional training and awareness programs to promote best practices in environmental management and compliance across operational teams.
  • Oversee environmental audits and inspections, ensuring accurate documentation and proactive resolution of non-compliance issues.
  • Analyze data, including spatial data, to identify land-use and environmental constraints for preliminary facility locations based on economic, technical, social and environmental criteria.
  • Support contractor management activities to ensure vendors are providing accurate and reasonable deliverables to align with ATCO’s risk tolerance.
  • The ability to provide field support, such as wetland delineation for high-priority projects, is considered an asset.
  • Provide oversight and support for Release Reporting, sustainability reporting, and incident management (and associated communications with regulatory bodies), as required.
  • Participate, as required, in activities such as contractor orientation, training, audits, and liaison with regulatory agencies.
  • Complete regulatory, submission, reporting, and summarization, as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or certificate in Environment, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Soil Sciences, Planning, or a related field (e.g., Forestry, Agriculture, Geography). An associated professional designation is considered an asset.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in environmental assessments, permitting, regulatory compliance, and management systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Alberta and Canadian regulations, including Public Lands Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Water Act, and AER Directives.
  • Track record of executing and maintaining compliance with regulatory obligations.
  • Proficient in MS 360 Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, SharePoint)
  • Skilled in GIS software (ArcGIS Pro, Esri Portal), map and air photo interpretation, and external data sources (SPIN II, AbaData, Landscape Analysis Tool, FWMIS).
  • Authenticating Wetland Professional in Alberta is an asset.
  • Experience authenticating wetland, aquatics, reclamation, or wildlife documents, is preferred.
  • Highly effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including negotiation and relationship-building.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to influence best practices and drive organizational change.
  • Excellent decision-making, time management, organizational, and planning skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to critically evaluate technical information, analyze risk and cost, and develop creative solutions to environmental challenges.
