Description: Concession Worker – Temporary

Location: G.W. Graham Secondary School

Hourly Rate: $27.30

Shift (subject to change): 7:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Hours per Day/Week: 5 hours per day / 25 hours per week

Plus 8 minutes extra per day due to LOU

Months per Year: 10

Concession Worker



Division: 5 (Education Assistant)

Reports to: Principal

Job Summary




Under the direction of the school site Principal, assists in the school’s meals program by preparing and serving food; does not hold responsibility for the overall operation of the cafeteria. Prepares and serves food while maintaining food safety, takes inventory and stocks vending machines, orders foods and supplies, acting as a cashier and maintaining food and accounting records.



Duties and Responsibilities




  • Prepares, serves and/or sells food items before and during meal periods
  • Sets up and maintains steam trays and other serving areas for hot and cold menu items
  • Portions, packages and presents, food for sale to students and staff
  • Prepares and serves meals to meet program goals. Prepares a variety of hot and cold food items and portions of the prepared foods for sale or service for students and staff.
  • Undertakes basic cooking duties such as par-boiling ingredients and assembling simple dishes according to established recipes.
  • Assist in determining the pricing of prepared food items
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and organized work area; washes and sanitizes supplies and equipments
  • Receives, stores and rotates food supplies; maintains inventory records
  • Operates commercial kitchen equipments (meat slicer, industrial dishwasher, mixer, grill pan or oven, etc.)
  • Shops for supplies
  • Handles cash trays, operates the cash register, records sales, and GST, and prepares deposits.
  • Washes, dries, and stores kitchen laundry
  • Supports menu planning and food supply ordering.
  • Stocks and monitors vending machines, orders products and reports service needs.
  • Ensures kitchen facilities and service areas are ready for daily use.
  • Supervises volunteers with:

i. Safe food preparation and storage practice

ii. Proper use of kitchen equipment

iii. Cleaning and sanitation procedures

  • Performs all other cafeteria related or emergent duties.



Tools and Equipment Used




Operates and maintains a variety of equipment and systems, including commercial kitchen appliances (meat slicer, industrial dishwasher, mixer, grill pan or oven), point-of-sale systems (cash register, Moneris or similar devices), Microsoft Office tools for ordering and tracking supplies, and vending machines for stocking and monitoring operations. Will need to operate a washer and dryer.



Required Knowledge, Ability, Skills




  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid Food Safe Certificate.
  • At least 6 months experience in a high-volume setting, such as catering, restaurants, or institutional kitchens.
  • At least 6 months experience working with children.
  • A valid Safety Oriented First Aid Certificate
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures, including Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and Workers' Compensation Board regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of spreadsheet computer functions.
  • Basic bookkeeping skills.
  • Basic Microsoft office tools
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use courtesy and tact in settling complaints, requests, and clarification of information in contacts with public, parents, staff and students.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to plan and schedule work and organize workload effectively.
  • Ability to perform individually and as part of a team.
  • Ability to lift and carry weighted material up to and including 20 lbs.
  • Criminal record check required through the Criminal Records Review Program
