Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Training and Support Services, the Suppression Technician will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating the maintenance and repair of the SCBA inventory and small equipment as well as ordering and maintaining a complex inventory of required parts for the SCBA, high-pressure compressed air vessels, and high-pressure air compressors. In addition to the duties assigned related to SCBA, the Suppression Technician will also coordinate and oversee the maintenance and repair of all Bunker Gear, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Multi-gas Detectors, Calibration Gas equipment, medical and all other related ancillary firefighting equipment such as Radios, Hand Tools, Hose, Hose Appliances, and Nozzles.

Primary Duties will include:


  • Managing the SCBA program in accordance with the Oakville Fire Department’s Respiratory Protection Program including making recommendations for changes as per CSA, Scott Health and Safety and any other relevant standards.
  • Liaising with the authorized SCBA repair/testing centre for all warranty work and/or repairs that may require a third-party diagnosis, repair or certification.
  • Responsible for cleaning, testing, repairing and conducting air flow tests in accordance with the Breathing Apparatus manufacturer’s recommendations, that will include oxygen and air regulators, self-contained breathing apparatus, face pieces, and portable air carts.
  • Performing weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually and annual inspections, repairs, testing and service work related to the job and ensure appropriate documentation is maintained.
  • Maintaining the department’s compressors to the applicable current CSA standards for self-contained breathing air and coordinating all compressor service, maintenance and air samples with the authorized repair/servicing company.
  • Responsible for performing fit testing (SCBA and N95 masks) and related filing and records keeping.
  • Coordinate and oversee the maintenance of all fit testing equipment.
  • Maintaining an office filing system and inputting all service work and related repairs into a computerized maintenance program, along with keeping accurate maintenance records.
  • Assisting in maintaining cylinder inventory full and ready.
  • Coordinate hydrostatic testing of SCBA cylinders.
  • Establishing a re-order point for stock purposes of inventory, requisitions parts, supplies and equipment as required to maintain the Respiratory Protection Program.


Additional duties may include:

  • Assisting with making arrangements for sizing, inspection, repairs, and replacement of Oakville Fire Department personnel bunker gear, bunker gear bags, and personal protective equipment.
  • Coordinate and oversee the validation of the acceptance fitting of new bunker gear.
  • Coordinate and oversee the annual Hose Testing and Inspection.
  • Coordinate and oversee the battery maintenance program.
  • Coordinate and Oversee all Department Radios and the required updates and maintenance.
  • Assisting with the delivery and pick-up of various emergency vehicles.
  • Coordinate and oversee the performance of monthly inspections and re-calibration of portable multi-gas detection apparatus and related instrumentation and equipment.
  • Coordinate and oversee all maintenance and repairs of multi-gas detectors and calibration equipment.
  • Lead the inspection and arrangements for the repair of hose, hose appliances, nozzles, ladders, air bags, vehicle extrication equipment, portable fans and generators, and other safety, firefighting, and rescue equipment.
  • Assist with the testing and maintaining of Haz Mat suits and equipment.
  • Oversee and manage equipment, bunker gear, PPE, and supplies withing the department inventory management system.
  • Capable of operating apparatus, trucks, tractors, snowplows, etc. in a safe and efficient manner when licensed and trained to do so.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.


Qualifications/Skills

  • Must attend and successfully qualify as a factory trained in-house Breathing Apparatus Technician and as a condition to maintain the position must re-qualify every two (2) years thereafter as per Scott Health and Safety requirements.
  • Successful candidate must attend and successfully pass within the first twelve (12) months (based on availability):
  • Scott/3M – SCBA Certified Technician 1 and 2
  • CSA Quality Breathing Air – Administrator course
  • CSA Respiratory Protection Certificate
  • CSA Fit Testing Certification
  • Zoll Medical Advanced Service Program for in-house maintenance

- Tote-L-Vac Advanced Service Program for in-house maintenance

  • Compressor Advanced Service Program for in-house maintenance
  • Hose, Hose Appliance, and Nozzle Inspection and Maintenance course(s)
  • Innotex Bunker Gear Sizing and Fitting training
  • MSA RITE Certification Class
  • MSA Competent User for Calibration Stations
  • MSA Competent User for Portable Instrument Training
  • MSA Competent Person for Equipment Training
  • Must be willing to take additional courses relating to new developments in equipment design and computerized maintenance tracking programs.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) or willing to attend courses for proficiency.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Ontario Traffic Manual, Book 7. is required
