FTE: 1.0, 35 hours per week

This is a temporary position with an end date of August 31, 2026.

Position Description

Purpose

The primary purpose of this position is to contribute to all CBE approved aspects of payroll processing cycles for +25,000 pays per month and associated benefits. Ensuring the pay is processed in a timely and accurate manner and in accordance with payroll compliance, legislation, and the Calgary Board of Education collective agreements and terms and conditions of employment.

Accountability

  • Ensures the accurate processing and completeness of the pay processing cycle.
  • Contributes to the integrity of the payroll function within CBE by maintaining payroll practices and procedures.

Major responsibilities

  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Responsible to perform day-to-day workflow of all CBE approved payroll functions while ensuring key target dates within the pay cycles are met with a focus on achieving the highest level of processing accuracy.
  • Prepares Records of Employment (ROE) for individual employees who experience a break in service.
  • Performs a wide variety of payroll processing activities, including but not limited to calculating and recording individual retroactive payments, salary increases, vacation/sick time accruals, payroll earnings and deductions.
  • Verifies all payroll entries including but not limited to deductions, earnings and changes to review and reconcile payroll data and resolve any discrepancies as necessary.
  • Communicates with HR Services to ensure the integrity of the payroll data.
  • Researches and resolves questions from managers and employees as they relate to the processing of payroll information.
  • Follows up and resolves items of discrepancy and processes problems within area of responsibility based on standard work procedures.
  • Effectively researches and stays current with CRA rules and legislative pay requirements.
  • Performs testing of payroll system changes, as required.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as assigned to meet the purpose and accountabilities of the role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Minimum 1 years’ payroll experience – experience in a large, multi-union complex organization preferred.
  • Successful completion of Canadian Payroll Association certification.
  • 1 year of related post-secondary education (inclusive of the coursework required for the Canadian Payroll Association certification).
  • Knowledge of payroll related rules and legislations.
  • Complete familiarity with automated payroll systems, preferably PeopleSoft.
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and follow through to resolve any outstanding issues.
  • Time management skills – demonstrated ability, prioritization, multitasking and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team orientated work setting of high volume workloads with multiple, tight and demanding timelines.
