Your role
CBC Local Services Finance is looking for a Senior Manager, Controller, Finance to join our CBC Atlantic Regional team, responsible for the Atlantic region (Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island). We are a 24-7 breaking news, radio programming, and digital content organization, with reach across television, radio, online, and mobile platforms.
Based in Halifax, you will lead the CBC Atlantic Region Finance team, and will be integral to the Regional Management team work directly with program and operations leaders, providing a high degree of professional counsel, and advice to ensure financial decisions support local and corporate strategies. Reporting to the Senior Director, Finance – Local Services, you will be responsible for the business management of the day-to-day activities of CBC News and Radio programming and operations. This role includes a broad range of financial and non-financial responsibilities and deals with confidential and sensitive local services strategy initiatives.

This role includes a broad range of financial and non-financial responsibilities and deals with confidential and sensitive local services strategy initiatives.
Key Areas Of Responsibility
- Manage and execute Atlantic Region, annual planning, budgeting, forecasting, analysis and business reporting.
- Provides detailed analysis of business operations, including monthly and quarterly expenditure tracking, budget variances, recommending and implementing courses of action to maintain budget integrity. Present results to Senior Director, Finance and Regional Director.
- Provides guidance on cost effective production schedules to make daily business decisions for the production unit(s) in order to achieve overall program objectives.
- Provides Financial support and guidance for complex projects such as Federal and Provincial Elections and evolving technical aspects tied to production of live events.
- Interpret, explain, report on and provide advice on business management issues to Senior Management and Program Producers and other non-financial programming managers.
- Adapt and evolve the Finance support role to better partner with the business and operations to provide analytic support both anticipating and reflecting ongoing and future business support requirements
- Manage competing priorities for resources and identify incremental funding requirements when necessary. Ability to interpret programming requirements in terms of both budgetary and human resources required
- Review and adapt and streamline processes by identifying and reducing non value-add and redundant workflows in order to maximize analytical and business support to the business and operations.
- Work in conjunction with Human Resources and Business Affairs to ensure that staffing and contracting adhere to agreed terms. Ensure compliance with labour agreements, CBC policies and CBC/Industry business practices.
- SAP/BW inquires.
- CBC Policies – including Procurement, Travel and Employment.
- Lead in adopting and adapting new financial analytic tools by leveraging new resources such as BW and TM1 to automate workflows and better respond to business reporting and information needs.
- Support the Senior Director Finance, Local Services on consolidated files and reporting.
- Responsible for recruitment, selection, mentoring, and development of 4 staff.
- Play a leadership role as senior member within in the extended English Services Finance and the One Finance teams by engaging with and contributing to the Finance team mandate and objectives.
- Work collaboratively within the Local Services Finance team to share best practices, identify opportunities to standardize processes and workflows, maximize. technology and systems opportunities and mentor and lead Local Services Finance staff in conjunction with fellow regional controller colleagues.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
- Relevant University degree combined with a professional accounting designation (CPA CA, CPA, CMA, CPA CGA).
- 5+ years of progressive experience within a relevant financial role.
- Experience working effectively in a Senior Management team structure.
- Demonstrated ability for strong strategic management and leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, lead and manage a team through an environment and culture of change.
- Strong time management skills to manage multiple projects and competing priorities under tight timelines in a dynamic and demanding environment.
- Experience in managing internal and external business relationships, with a strong client-focus orientation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Superior interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
- Knowledge of SAP and BI is an asset.
- Experience in media or communications is an asset.
- Travel to Newfoundland & Labrador, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island is required.
