Position Summary:

Reporting to the Supervisor of Recreation and Fitness Programs or designate, the Day Camp Counsellor is responsible for implementing and supervising a safe recreational experience for children of various ages

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, implement, and supervise various recreation experiences for children ages 4 to 12.
  • Implement program lesson plans and daily schedules.
  • Attend all staff training (40 hours) prior to the start of camp and weekly staff meetings.
  • Responsible for cooperative games, leisure experiences, crafts, sports activities, and day trips.
  • Ensure site safety as well as the personal safety of each camper while carrying out planned activities.
  • Comply with applicable provincial and municipal legislation, including the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and the Municipality’s Records and Information Management Program.
  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, applicable regulations, and the Municipality’s Health and Safety Program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills:

  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age at the time of employment.
  • Must be a full-time student enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary school and returning to school at the end of the summer employment term. (Consideration for employment may be given to recent graduates with previous Day Camp experience).
  • Must have completed a minimum of an Ontario Secondary School Grade 10 education or will complete grade 10 within 1 year of hire date or equivalent.
  • Post-Secondary enrollment in a related field, including Education, Early Childhood Education, Human Kinetics or Recreation would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in delivering and/or working with children and youth of various ages, preferably ages 4 to 12.
  • Previous day camp experience is considered an asset.
  • Strong communication skills and a keen ability to understand and engage with children.
  • Experience and creativity in planning recreation programs.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with HIGH FIVE certification and experience working with children or education/courses in childhood development.
  • Standard First Aid/CPR/AED Level “C” considered an asset.
  • The ability to swim and skate proficiently is considered an asset.
  • Upon hire and when requested, must obtain a satisfactory police clearance

Hours of Work and Working Conditions: 15 to 40 hours per week (Monday-Friday)
