Job Description
The Senior Data Analyst is a pivotal role responsible for leading the development and maintenance of complex business intelligence solutions that drive critical decision-making for the National Shipbuilding Strategy and the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy vessel construction projects at Seaspan Vancouver Shipyards. This role demands a high level of expertise in data modeling, advanced querying, and robust reporting to maximize the accessibility and business value derived from diverse organizational data. The Senior Data Analyst is also responsible for developing innovative analytics, supporting advanced users, and optimizing the entire data lifecycle from source to visualization within a cutting-edge data warehouse environment.
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

What You'll Do
- Designs, develops, and maintains highly complex Power BI reports and dashboards, incorporating advanced data modeling techniques to integrate data from disparate shipbuilding systems
- Works extensively with Databricks and Delta Lake, developing optimized "gold" level SQL queries for Power BI models, and performing advanced transformations directly within the data warehouse where appropriate.
- Identifies, maps, and implements data lineage and transformation strategies, determining the optimal stage for data manipulation (data warehouse vs. Power BI data model) to ensure data quality, performance, and scalability.
- Leads the integration of data from various core shipbuilding systems, including ARAS (PLM), Oracle P6 (Scheduling), IFS/JD Edwards (ERP/MRP), and future Oracle Cloud ERP, ensuring a unified and coherent data model for comprehensive reporting.
- Develops sophisticated Power BI data models, leveraging advanced DAX expressions and Power Query (M language) to create robust measures, calculated columns, and tables that meet complex business requirements.
- Collaborates closely with business stakeholders to understand complex requirements, translate them into impactful data visualizations, and iteratively refine reports to ensure maximum user adoption and actionable insights.
- Validates data sources, complex transformations, and analytical outputs against business rules and reference data to guarantee the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of all derived reports.
- Creates comprehensive documentation for business requirements, data sources, infrastructure, complex data models, and reporting governance processes to provide clarity and context for all data consumers.
- Acts as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Business Intelligence, providing guidance, training, and knowledge transfer to team members and business users on advanced Power BI functionalities, data best practices, and data interpretation.
- Optimizes all stages of the data analysis process, from data extraction and advanced querying to data modeling and visualization, ensuring high performance and efficiency of all BI solutions.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, Business Analytics, or a closely related quantitative field. Master's degree is an asset.
- 7 - 10 years of progressive experience in data analysis and business intelligence, with a strong emphasis on complex report development in large-scale enterprise environments.
- Demonstrated expert-level experience with Microsoft Power BI, including advanced data modeling, DAX, Power Query (M), and custom visualizations.
- Proven expert-level experience with SQL for complex query development, performance tuning, and data manipulation, ideally within a data warehouse environment like Databricks.
- Extensive hands-on experience working with Databricks and Delta Lake architectures, specifically in developing gold-layer queries for BI consumption.
- Demonstrated experience integrating data from diverse enterprise systems, particularly within a manufacturing or project-driven industry (e.g., ERP, PLM, Scheduling systems).
- Experience with Azure Analytics Services, including Azure SQL Data Warehouse and Azure Analysis Services, is highly desirable.
- Experience in a shipbuilding, heavy manufacturing, or large-scale project management environment is a significant asset.
- Expert Data Modeling Skills: Deep understanding and practical application of star schema, snowflake schema, and other advanced data modeling techniques within Power BI and data warehouses.
- Advanced SQL & Query Optimization: Exceptional proficiency in writing and optimizing complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and functions for large datasets.
- DAX & M Language Mastery: Ability to write highly efficient and complex DAX measures, calculated columns, and tables, as well as advanced Power Query (M) transformations.
- Data Architecture Understanding: Strong conceptual and practical understanding of data warehousing principles, ETL/ELT processes, and data lake concepts.
- Analytical & Problem-Solving Acumen: Superior analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to dissect complex business problems, identify underlying data issues, and propose innovative BI solutions.
- Business Acumen: Strong understanding of shipbuilding operations, project management methodologies (e.g., Earned Value Management), and financial reporting, allowing for effective translation of business needs into technical solutions.
- Communication & Collaboration: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with business stakeholders at all levels, explain complex technical concepts, and present data-driven insights clearly and concisely.
- Autonomy & Proactiveness: Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision, manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment, and proactively identify opportunities for BI improvement.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail in data validation, report development, and documentation to ensure the highest level of accuracy and reliability.
