The Senior Associate Portfolio Manager (SAPM) works closely with the Portfolio Management team in executing the Department Investment Program goals and implementing investment strategies to maximize the risk adjusted returns for both funds. This consists of rigorous screening and bottom-up analysis of global companies to identify high-quality candidates for portfolio inclusion. BCI’s investment process involves financial and qualitative analysis, meeting with management teams, research analysts, and industry experts with the goal of producing detailed high conviction investment recommendations that incorporate supported investment views at a stock level that are differentiated from market expectations.


The SAPM thrives in a dynamic team environment. They actively collaborate with their Global Equities colleagues to maximize the overall performance of the portfolios through actively debating and challenging ideas, sharing knowledge and resources, and embracing an openness to new ideas and perspectives from all team members. The SAPM also mentors and helps develop less experienced team members. The SAPM will be tasked with producing investment recommendations in the consumer discretionary and consumer staples sectors focused on developed Global markets.


The role can be based in Victoria, BC (preferred); Vancouver or New York offices considered for qualified candidates.


WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH

The Capital Markets & Credit Investments (CM&CI) department manages C$165B of capital markets and credit investments (56% of total net AUM of BCI). The department invests globally across Credit, Equities, Fixed Income, Derivatives, and Absolute Return Strategies, with investment teams located in BCI's global offices in Victoria, Vancouver, New York, and London. As a leader in responsible investing, CM&CI actively integrates ESG factors into investment analysis and decision-making processes across all strategies.


The Global Equities team generates high-conviction stock recommendations in support of two Global Equity mandates: Global Fundamental and Global Thematic. These two portfolios have combined assets under management in excess of $4 billion CAD.

  • Global Fundamental – The fund seeks to provide capital appreciation with a focus on downside protection by investing in high quality, return generative companies trading at reasonable valuations.
  • Global Thematic – The fund invests in stocks positioned to benefit in long term technological, economic, demographic and sustainability trends. Upside capture from these themes is a key objective.


Both funds are concentrated long-only funds that invest in developed markets with a benchmark of MSCI World ex Canada.


WHAT YOU BRING

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in global investment management, consulting, corporate finance, investment banking or related fields is preferred
  • Relevant degree and/or CFA is preferred
  • Strong knowledge of global consumer stocks, or other relevant value chains, as well as global economic drivers
  • Strong research, financial modelling, analytical and valuation skills
  • Prior experience implementing derivative strategies within long-only equity mandates is preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a history of working successfully in team environments
  • Strong work ethic, desire for continuous learning, receptive to new ideas and embraces innovation
  • High ethical standards


WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Conduct intensive fundamental analysis with focus on the drivers behind long-term valuation and scenario-based risk analysis
  • Perform primary research, develop a network of industry contacts, visit companies, attend trade shows, etc.
  • Analyze long term investment themes in context of individual stock recommendations
  • Develop and maintain relationships with research contacts, management teams, and other stakeholders
  • Source, select and manage concentrated publicly listed equity positions that fit investment themes and can outperform global markets over the long term
  • Contribute to team performance through collaboration with other team members. This includes developing a base knowledge of other team members’ portfolio holdings and themes to contribute insights and research
  • Work on various ongoing projects that build and improve on a common core of research for portfolio stocks
  • Assist with the day-to-day management of the portfolio including and not limited to, responding to corporate actions, daily cash management, and implementing stock and FX trades

SALARY RANGE

The annualized base salary range for this ideally Victoria-based role is CAD $158,000 to $183,000.
