Summary:
Child and Youth programs provide children and youth ages 4–17 the opportunity to build self-esteem, motor skills, creativity, and social connections through a variety of recreational activities, arts and crafts, skill-building programs, and community-based experiences.
Role:
Reporting to the Supervisor, Recreation Services, the Inclusive Program Instructor develops and facilitates programs and supports children and youth aged 4-12 with special needs in existing programs at various sites throughout the City of London. This casual, public-facing role operates in a fast-paced, team-based environment and is responsible for ensuring programs are delivered safely, inclusively, and efficiently while providing excellent customer service to City of London participants, families, volunteers, and community partners.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop and facilitate programs for children and youth with special needs.
- Work with Child and Youth Program staff to adapt program activities to support participants of all abilities and needs.
- Monitor facility accommodations to ensure accessibility, safety, and activity requirements are met.
- Maintain regular communication with parents/caregivers throughout the program duration.
- Use appropriate behaviour modification and positive guidance techniques when supporting participants.
- Ensure adherence to all City of London policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Support participants in building independence, confidence, and social skills.
- Demonstrate strong coaching, mentoring, and teamwork skills.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to support participant safety and program quality.
- Maintain a positive, enthusiastic, and inclusive approach to program delivery.
- Ensure high program standards and promote healthy development through play-based and skill-building activities.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service and professional communication with participants, parents/caregivers, staff, and the public.
- Demonstrate commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression, and human rights through daily practice and interactions.
- Demonstrate commitment to Health and Safety legislation and actively promote a culture of safety.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience working with children and youth with exceptionalities and behavioural challenges, preferably in a recreation or community-based program setting.
- Experience supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorders is an asset.
- HIGH FIVE – Healthy Child Development Certification (prior to the start of the program)
- Standard First Aid Certificate (prior to the start of the program).
- Vulnerable Sector Police Check (VSPC) (prior to the start of the program).
Minimum age 16 by start of programs.
Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Knowledge of behaviour management and positive support strategies.
- Strong communication skills, enthusiasm, and a consistently positive attitude.
- High level of comfort working in fast-paced, public-facing environments.
- Sign language fluency and/or a second language is an asset (please indicate on résumé).
