Join us as our new Financial Literacy Advisor!

This position will support students in developing strong financial skills and making informed decisions about their education and personal finances. In this role, the advisor will work one-on-one with students to help them understand their financial situations, develop manageable payment plans, and connect with relevant financial resources and supports. The advisor will also provide financial education, guidance, and tools to domestic students, with the goal of reducing financial stress, preventing unnecessary debt, and promoting long-term financial well-being. By empowering students with practical knowledge and personalized support, this role contributes to student success, persistence, and overall confidence in navigating financial responsibilities throughout their academic journey.

What You’ll Do:
  • Plans and executes proactive communication strategies for financial aid opportunities.
  • Conducts personalized outreach to students with outstanding balances on their student account to advise and guides students to appropriate financial aid resources.
  • Explains charges and payments on student accounts and communicates University financial policies.
  • Provides clear and accurate information in print or on the website regarding student financial aid opportunities.
  • Meets individually with students to give guidance on budgeting, managing expenses, repayment planning, and resolving financial challenges.
  • Reviews student fees, calculates term charges, and analyzes their resources and expenses to get a complete picture of their financial situation.
  • Explains complex procedures regarding financial aid, and guides students to the correct applications and resources.
  • Assists students with improving their access to scholarships and bursaries.
  • Understands and can interpret a variety of University and scholarship-related policies that affect student award eligibility.
  • Communicates with government financial aid partners, financial aid organizations, and other financial aid lenders to provide financial planning advice to students.
  • Contacts provincial and federal funding bodies to inquire about the status of student loans and grants.
  • Liaises with various internal departments when appropriate to act as an advocate for students.
  • Delivers group workshops, webinars, and presentations on budgeting, debt management, and financial literacy topics.
  • Meets individually with students as they request emergency financial assistance and determines independently whether to provide funding.
  • Reviews spending and budgets from multiple operational and trust accounts to ensure that funds are utilized appropriately.
  • Updates student data in multiple systems and maintains student records according to relevant student record retention policy.
  • Reviews multiple financial aid portals, confirms enrolment, and problem-solves issues with the administration of student financial aid funds.
  • Provides statistical reports from a variety of university systems to evaluate and recommend improvements related to student financial aid administration.

  • Undergraduate degree.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in a financial aid setting, preferably in a university environment.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.




Skills That Will Ensure Your Success in the Role:
  • Experience in field of student government financial assistance or student awards administration would be a strong asset.
  • Ability to make decisions based on sound judgment.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems using analytical skills, reasoning, and research.
  • Demonstrated ability to set, direct, and achieve goals in alignment with an overall strategic mission.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service in a student-centered environment.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating in a cross-culturally sensitive manner.
  • Knowledge of Banner Student Module and related reports (or similar experienceworking with complex databases and reporting).
  • Strong technical, computer, and analytical expertise.
  • Ability to lead system implementations and upgrades and collaborate with IT andother partners to meet changing user requirements.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures related to Enrolment Services.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Experience with conflict resolution and making independent discretionary decisions.
  • Experience with writing instruction manuals and training others on complex policies and programs.
  • Experience working with multiple deadlines and conflicting priorities.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment and dealing with sensitive information.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience with Government Student Financial Aid, Scholarships, and Awards would be an asset.
  • Experience with and understanding of the Freedom of Information and the Protection of Privacy Act.
  • Able to identify and report unsafe acts, workplace hazards, and incidents that result (or could result) in injury, illness, or environmental damage.
