Join our team as a Project Engineer in Training (EIT) and play a vital role in shaping our city's neighborhoods through the Neighbourhood Renewal Program.

Reporting to a Senior Engineer you will be responsible for taking on neighbourhood design engineering projects at various stages of renewal. This includes the design of critical transportation facilities —such as roads, sidewalks, curb ramps, traffic safety measures, and active transportation facilities—following the City of Edmonton Complete Streets Design and Construction standards (CSDCS) and renewal best practices.

Your role will require the independent generation of recommendations for decision-making. You will be actively involved in project coordination with internal and external partners , reviewing consultant submissions, and providing technical recommendations to peers, technologists, and the project management team. This is an excellent opportunity to apply your engineering knowledge to impactful community projects and support Senior Engineer-led initiatives.

What will you do?

  • Prepare and recommend for approval preliminary, IFT (tender/proposal), and IFC (issued for construction) engineering drawings in collaboration with in-house engineering technologists
  • Work with Project Management teams (Develop and Deliver) to ensure the accurate and on-time delivery of Neighbourhood Renewal projects
  • Respond to and provide support for inquiries related to design practices, standards, guidelines, and design exceptions from both internal and external engineering consultants
  • Provide technical feedback on proposed concept and planning level changes, under the guidance of a Professional Engineer
  • Conduct preliminary walks, site inspections, and data collection to assess feasibility, existing conditions, constraints, and potential issues for renewal projects
  • Review, verify, and recommend grade design prepared by technologists for approval by a Professional Engineer
  • Review, provide comments/feedback on, and recommend for internal approval externally prepared engineering drawings (Preliminary, IFT, & IFC)
  • Apply the City of Edmonton Complete Streets Design and Construction standard, Transportation Association of Canada guidelines, and renewal best practices to designs
  • Support Project Managers and design consultants throughout the design process, including providing oversight and comments during the creation of concept plans and site walks
  • Provide guidance and technical recommendations to peers (members in training), engineering technologists, and co-op students
  • Support leadership in initiatives, continuous improvement projects, and the implementation of departmental Health and Safety and ENVISO programs
  • Review and provide comments/feedback on circulations from other City sections


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized University
  • Experience in the area of specialization and knowledge of relevant codes are required. Co-op and/or Summer work experience in Transportation or Roadway design is considered an asset
  • Must be registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with APEGA (in good standing) and working towards a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment


Assets:

  • Familiarity or training with principles of geometric design of roadways
  • Familiarity with geometric design of roadways and familiarity with design standards and guidelines such as the City of Edmonton Complete Streets Design and Construction standards and TAC (Transportation Association of Canada) guidelines and principles
  • Familiarity with City Bylaws, Servicing Standards, procedures and specifications
  • Additional training or knowledge of: traffic engineering; structural engineering; drainage engineering; and roadway structural construction techniques
  • Experience with AutoCAD/Civil 3D

  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and produce results in fast paced, changing environment
  • Must be proficient with Google Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms)

Conditions of employment & work environment:

  • Up to: 1 temporary full-time position for up to 18 months
  • Hours of work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday
  • Salary: $35.600 - $43.271 (Hourly; $74,332.80 - $90,349.85 (Annually)
  • This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
  • Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance


Work Environment:

  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and office, and will require site visits and outdoor reviews at the construction site
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
