Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for an Occupational Therapist to join the Transitional Pain Clinic team at Vancouver General Hospital working as a Clinical Specialist. Apply today to join our team!

As an Occupational Therapist with VCH you will

  • Specialize in acute and chronic pain management following integrated behavioural change methods of care from an occupational therapy perspective.
  • Provide formal clinical and technical consultation and advisory services for health care providers in hospitals and the community on a national and international level.
  • Review literature.
  • Analyse trends and recommend changes to modify/change current clinical practices.
  • Provide occupational therapy evidence-based assessment and treatment.
  • Act as a clinical resource to students and staff.
  • Initiate and participate in research and quality improvement activities.


Education & Experience

  • Current full registration as an Occupational Therapists in the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC).
  • Eligible for membership with the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT).
  • Five (5) years' recent, related experience providing interventions and education related to complex pain management and integrated behavioral approaches that target occupational participation, including one (1) year's experience mentoring and coaching others to build competencies in complex pain management, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Credentialling through the Canadian Academy of Pain Management or greater standard (successful completion of Pain Certificate from University of Alberta or McGill University) required.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of evidence-based clinical practice related to acute and persistent pain conditions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of adult education principles, methods and tools.
  • Broad knowledge of occupational therapy clinical practice within a client and family centred model of care related to treatment and care of patients with complex pain conditions.
  • Broad knowledge of research process and methodology.
  • Broad knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care.
  • Broad knowledge of established provincial standards of practice guidelines for clinical practitioners.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective consultation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the pathophysiology of pain.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to use relevant frames of reference in practice such as Pain Neuromatrix (approach to rehab), biomechanical, CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), rehabilitative, MI (motivational interviewing), and ACT (acceptance commitment therapy).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the CHCPBC standards of practice and guidelines for occupational therapists.
  • General of knowledge Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and strengths-based care.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safety care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based clinical practice related to designated clinical area(s).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of occupational therapy standardized tests and measures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research process and methodology.
  • Documented involvement as a research investigator and/or published researcher.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop education programs and materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and empower clients to assume control over their health.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to unexpected events, problem-solve, set priorities and deal with conflict.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (orally and in writing) and deal effectively with clients and their families, coworkers, physicians, other health care staff, and staff of external agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others in a complex health care environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize when referral to another health care professional is required.
  • Demonstrated skill in Occupational Therapy techniques and the use of applicable equipment and supplies.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including the ability to effectively use a computerized client care information system and literacy with word processing, spreadsheet and database skills.
  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position.


The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.
