HDR is seeking a Senior Healthcare Planner, to join our growing team and help shape the future of healthcare environments that improve health outcomes for communities.
We’re looking for someone who is passionate about planning innovative, patient-centered healthcare spaces and is inspired by the opportunity to work on impactful projects across Western Canada, as well as nationally and globally. At HDR, you’ll be part of an integrated health practice, connected to a global network of healthcare planning and design experts—offering you the opportunity to both contribute to and learn from a broader community of thought leaders driving excellence and innovation in healthcare.
As a Senior Healthcare Planner, you’ll work on a diverse range of project types and scales. Project typologies will include acute care hospitals, ambulatory care centres, mental health and addictions facilities, and specialized clinical environments.
This role requires a strategic thinker who can lead clinical healthcare planning efforts, collaborate across disciplines, and communicate clearly with clients, user groups, and project teams. You will help guide the development of clinical workflows, space programs, and planning strategies that directly impact the quality-of-care delivery.

In the role of Senior Health Planner, we'll count on you to:
- Lead and contribute to the clinical planning of healthcare facilities across our projects of varying scales in Western Canada
- Engage with clinical stakeholders, health authorities, and project teams to develop functional programs and evidence-based planning solutions
- Analyze operational models and patient flows to inform space planning and support efficient, safe, and patient-centered care environments
- Collaborate with architects, designers, engineers, and project managers throughout all project phases, from early planning through design and delivery
- Navigate local health authority guidelines, regulatory requirements, and best practices in healthcare delivery in British Columbia
- Support strategic and master planning efforts, including feasibility studies and scenario testing for new or renovated health facilities
- Participate in client and stakeholder meetings, clearly communicating planning concepts and facilitating user engagement sessions
- Bachelor’s/master’s degree in architecture, Interior Design, Health Systems Planning, or a related discipline
- Proficiency with REVIT, BIM modelling software
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project)
- Strong understanding of healthcare service delivery models, clinical operations, and facility planning best practices
- Excellent communication, leadership, and facilitation skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of an integrated design team
- Demonstrated experience in clinical planning across a wide range of departments in acute care healthcare facilities—including inpatient units, ICUs, emergency departments, operating rooms, MDRDs, Pharmacy, Clinical laboratories, and others—with strong knowledge of local health authority standards and best practices for these spaces
- Interest and/or experience in sustainable and wellness-focused healthcare design, including familiarity with LEED and net-zero strategies
- Working knowledge of CSA Z8000:18 (R2023) Canadian health care facilities
- WELL Accredited Professional (WELL AP) and/or Evidence-Based Design Accreditation and Certification (EDAC) credentials considered strong assets
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture or closely related field
- A minimum of 12 years related experience
- Strong organizational skills
- Knowledge of materials, methods and tools involved in the construction of buildings
- Understanding of design techniques, tools and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, prints, drawings and models
- An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
