Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking Academic Advisors for 2 full-time continuing opportunities with the Faculty of Health and Community Studies.
The University Advising team’s purpose is to guide and support students as they progress through their academic journey at MacEwan. You will work with students to help them understand the various pathways forward to a degree, diploma or certificate; assist and support students as they make choices which impact their future; and support students experiencing academic difficulty.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing students with information and resources to promote academic progress;
- Providing educational guidance and assistance for students by planning schedules, recommending courses and determining appropriate education solutions for different types of students;
- Monitor student progress and discuss concerns, including intervention during the current semester, while ensuring student retention through consistent follow-ups;
- Staying informed of current and changing rules, regulations and program requirements;
- Maintaining a broad understanding of all Faculty of Health and Community Studies programs of study, program and institutional graduation rules, inter-university transfer credit, academic and student service policies, and faculty and university administrative procedures impacting students;
- Providing accurate information on important academic dates, academic regulations, program details, and campus resources;
- Referring students to campus services relevant to their individual needs;
- Maintaining student files and records;
- Interpret and apply MacEwan academic policies and procedures;
- Supporting students encountering academic difficulties and developing strategies to promote retention and completion; and
- Participating in student orientation sessions and assisting students with admission and registration and providing guidance in course selection in keeping with the student's interests, values and abilities.
SKILLS
You will have:
- The ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing;
- Strong problem-solving skills;
- The ability to learn and use a variety of simple to complex computer applications;
- The ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships;
- The ability to work independently;
- The ability to prioritize and multi-task; and
- Strong presentation skills.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in a post-secondary institution working with students.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
