ABOUT THE ROLE

As part of our Farm Operations team, you’ll play a vital role in caring for our animals and creating an exceptional experience for visitors. Your responsibilities will include milking, monitoring animal health, treating illnesses, and administering prescribed medications. You’ll also perform artificial insemination or monitor animals for natural mating, ensuring the herd’s well-being and productivity.

Beyond animal care, you’ll operate farm machinery safely around the public, harvest crops, feed and groom animals, trim hooves, and handle chemicals responsibly. You’ll help maintain a clean, organized environment by completing daily chores before the museum opens.

This role is essential to providing a safe, educational space for visitors while upholding the highest standards of animal health and farm operations. If you’re passionate about agriculture, animal care, and sharing knowledge with the public, we’d love to have you on our team!

EDUCATION

  • Post-secondary education in an agriculture-related field; or
  • A minimum of five years of experience in animal husbandry or the farming industry (e.g., dairy, beef, horses, or small animals)

EXPERIENCE

  • Experienced in handling livestock safely around the public and identify signs of good health or illness.
  • Experience on calculating dosage/administrating medications to animals safely.
  • Experience with Operating tractors, hay equipment, skid steers and power take-off (PTO) systems; manage silo unloaders, stable cleaners, and other and other power equipment safely.
  • Experience and knowledge with operating heavy farm machinery safely with precision in crowded situation, confined spaces

KNOWLEDGE

  • Perform milking operations in compliance with ProAction Canada regulations and Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring proper techniques are applied while monitoring animal health for signs of illness.
  • Inspecting and troubleshooting milking equipment to ensure proper operation and hygiene.
  • Handle chemicals safely and maintain compliance with WHMIS training standards.
  • Proficient in farm management and productivity software, including Dairy Comp and Microsoft Word/Excel.
  • Keeping farm equipment in good working order and doing basic building repairs; harvesting crops; unloading hay or straw; lifting heavy bales; and climbing silos.
  • Prepare chemicals for cleaning pipelines

COMPETENCIES

  • Work well with a team or on your own; stay flexible and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to handle stress, deadlines, and distractions while performing physical work; adapt quickly and interact professionally with visitors. Demonstrate strong communication skills to engage with concerned individuals or activists, addressing questions from the public regarding modern farming practices in Canada.
  • Hold a valid G-class driver’s license (or Class 5 in Quebec); additional certifications considered assets include Safety at Heights, Confined Spaces, Fall Arrest, WHMIS, Forklift Operation, First Aid/CPR, and Drug Administration training.
  • Identify and report zoonotic illnesses and concerns; follow biosecurity protocols during outbreaks to prevent transmission from animals to humans (e.g., orf, E. coli, winter dysentery).
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift to 25 kg, work outdoors in all weather, and perform physically demanding tasks
