We are seeking a dedicated HSE Specialist to join our team and support the continued development and execution of CMN’s Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Program. This position plays a key role in ensuring our facilities, projects, people, and contractors operate safely and in compliance with Alberta OH&S legislation, Alberta Environment and Pesticide Regulations, ACSA COR standards, AWSA requirements, and CMN policies.

About The Role

Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the HSE Specialist provides hands-on safety support across all CMN locations. This role supports day-to-day safety operations, conducts inspections and spot audits, leads training, manages contractor compliance, and ensures our sites meet all legislative and internal HSE requirements. You will also support CAPEx projects, gather quotes for safety improvements, and provide recommendations to leadership for approval.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain CMN’s Health, Safety & Environment Program across all locations.
  • Ensure compliance with Alberta OH&S Act, Regulation & Code, Alberta Environment and Pesticide Regulations, ACSA COR, AWSA, WHMIS, and TDG requirements.
  • Conduct site visits, audits, inspections, and hazard assessments to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Deliver orientations, toolbox talks, and safety training for employees and contractors when required.
  • Support CAPEx and project work by ensuring safety requirements are built into planning and execution.
  • Work with the Director of Operations during project planning, equipment installs, upgrades, and construction.
  • Manage contractor qualifications, documentation, onboarding, and safe work expectations.
  • Make recommendations and set safety priorities for CMN based on observations, risk assessments, industry standards, and legislative requirements.
  • Work with external vendors to gather quotes and present options and recommendations to Directors for approval.
  • Verify that all CMN locations have proper safety tools, documentation, forms, and signage.
  • Participate in incident reporting, investigations, corrective actions, and WCB processes where required.
  • Maintain and track required employee safety training and certifications.
  • Develop and Support Emergency Response Plans and facilitate drills.
  • Work within an approved HSE budget.

Qualifications

Education & Training

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Safety, or related field.
  • OHS Certificate/Diploma, CRST (preferred), CRSP, CHSC, or equivalent is considered an asset.
  • Forklift Train the Trainer is considered an asset.
  • Certified in Qualitative Respirator Fit Testing is considered an asset.
  • Alberta Construction Safety Association training such as Leadership for Safety Excellence, Principles of Health & Safety Management, and Auditor Certification are strong assets.

Experience

  • 3–5+ years in HSE, safety coordination, or a related field.
  • Experience in agriculture, industrial, and logistics environments preferred.
  • Experience conducting audits, inspections, incident investigations (Systematic Cause Analysis Techniques), and hazard assessments.
  • Experience with Confined Space Entry, Energy Control, Fall Protection, and Machine Safeguarding (CSA).
  • Strong understanding of contractor management and project-based safety requirements.

Skills

  • Strong communication, training, and interpersonal skills.
  • Organized and able to prioritize workload accordingly
  • Present and training fellow workers and contractors on CMN policys, procedures and site requirements
  • Ability to work independently and travel regularly to CMN locations.
  • Able to travel to sites- 75% of the time
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite & experience with SiteDocs an asset.
