Job Posting – MV90/MSP Technician (Apprentice)

Location: Reports to 2245 Keene Rd, Peterborough, ON K9J 6X9. Our MV90/MSP Technicians support meters across Ontario and there is a significant level of travel in this position.
Reports to: Supervisor, Metering Services
Hours: 40 hours per week. This position is on site working 8:00AM - 4:30PM Monday to Friday, totaling 40 hours per week. Overtime rates apply to hours worked outside of these regular hours.
Wage: Starting at $36.13 per hour based on wage schedule in Collective Agreement.

Job Purpose

The MV90/MSP Technician is responsible for providing administrative and technical support services for Metering and Meter Service Provider (MSP) including Meter Trouble Report (MTR) resolution and client reporting. In addition, the Technician will assist in MDMA operations including MV-90.

Major Accountabilities

  • Assist with coordinating the Meter Service Provider (MSP) functions including materials procurement and management, scheduling of the various tasks to be performed and arranging for the prompt resolution of meter trouble calls as issued by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO)
  • Prepare wiring and layout drawings, conceptual drawings for review (CDR), single-line diagrams (SLD) and required complimentary forms for submission to the IES
  • Maintain day-to-day operation of Wholesale and Retail Settlement Systems, liaison with Settlement clients, and file Notice of Disagreements with Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) as required
  • Design and construct metering enclosures and related equipment for customer installations
  • Coordinate, install, inspect and commission meter installations to various standards completed at customer locations safely operate and maintain MSP owned test equipment.
  • On site MSP representative to inspect work performed by 3rd Party contractors to ensure that installations are constructed to required standards.
  • Perform all the processes required. Ensure timely and accurate filings, submissions, applications and record/data transfer to applicable governing bodies.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining written standards, develop new techniques, processes and reporting algorithms.
  • Provide back up support for MDMA functions including operation of the MV-90 Data Acquisition System, Validation, Editing and Estimating (VEE) process, variance reporting and provision of data to customers as contracted.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot communication issues related to PUI VPN network, manage modem and SIM card inventory, assign, install, and provide support for communication hardware on Client sites.
  • Able to work closely with vender support, Meter Manufacturers and the client in resolving issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Work closely with information technology and customer service support personnel in performing MDMA functions as it relates to VEE Processing, Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) Uploads, Settlements File Transfers and Billing Functions.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of regulatory changes in all jurisdictions, advise department personnel affected by such change and update all documentation, practices and procedures accordingly.
  • Continually review and keep abreast of pertinent legislation including:
    • Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA)
    • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
    • Electrical Safety Association and EUSA Rule Book
  • Responsible for personal safety and the safety of others that is dependent upon their actions. Report hazards and unsafe acts or conditions encountered on the job to fellow workers and supervisors. Responsible for having a working knowledge of all applicable safety legislation pertaining to the job.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/ Skill Requirements

Successful completion of a degree/diploma in a related field (electrical or electronic technology or equivalent).

A related degree or diploma (electrical or electronic technology or equivalent) and/or MEARIE Meter Technician Level I–III certification, or a 309A Construction and Maintenance Electrician license.

We also welcome applications from recent graduates with a relevant diploma who are looking to begin a Metering Apprenticeship.

Technical Competencies

  • Eligible to be certified as an Engineering Technician/Technologist with OACETT
  • Working experience with contracts, obligations, filing of reports, forms, and documents.
  • Knowledge and experience to integrate the requirements of electric metering with the MDMA functions.
  • Knowledge and understanding in the following areas:
    • Metering, meter hardware, meter programming, and data retrieval software
    • Operating systems, telecommunications, line-sharing devices, and TCP IP based systems including VLAN’s
    • Billing and CIS systems, electricity billing, and billing determinates
    • Ontario Energy Board (OEB)
    • IESO and VEE standards
    • Measurement Canada Codes, Standards, and Regulations as pertaining to Revenue Metering
    • MV-90 operations
    • Safety standards, Electrical Utility Safety Rules and Electrical Safety Authority
    • Hold current certification on the Utility Work Protection Code
    • Certified on proper use of fall arrest work methods and use of equipment.
  • Ability to work extended flexible hours and travel to remote locations as required in order to meet the needs of the customer.
  • Be able and willing to travel to obtain training, attend conferences, promote and market services to clients.
  • This person must have an entrepreneurial spirit with an ability to come up with creative, effective and innovative solutions to problems.
  • Demonstrated excellent safety record and safety-working attitude.
  • Excellent working knowledge and experience using MSOffice suite applications.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high ethical standards.
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance record.
  • Valid Class “G” driver’s licence with an excellent driving record. DZ licence is considered an asset.
  • Must Meet Physical Demands Analysis and normal colour vision is required.
