Position Information

Temporary position until approximately April 01, 2026.

This position primarily supports the Dementia Behavioral Support Team. It is a consultative role on an interdisciplinary team that helps to facilitate smooth transitions in care for people living with dementia at The Ottawa Hospital.

Rotation/Shifts

Days, 8 hour shifts.

This position provides coverage at the General and Civic campuses and off-site TCUs.

What You Will Do

  • Complete behavioral assessments and plan treatment strategies in conjunction with the care team;
  • Participate in the development and delivery of educational and informational programs;
  • Monitor patient progress and the effectiveness of individualized programs;
  • Recognize and respond to changes in patient behavior;
  • Prepare teaching materials;
  • Communicate and work collaboratively with other professionals.


Basic Requirements

  • University degree or a three year college diploma in behavioral sciences, psychology or other health related discipline;
  • Minimum of six (6) months of previous experience
  • Ability to practice in accordance with the policies and procedures of The Ottawa Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre and the standards of practice of Psychology as appropriate;
  • Knowledge and understanding of dementia and responsive behaviours;
  • Knowledge, understanding, skills and ability to apply behavioural assessment and intervention techniques to patients with dementia in conjunction with the team;
  • Excellent oral and written communication, social, problem-solving skills, judgment, flexibility and initiative;
  • Well developed organizational, listening and observational skills, ability to make effective decisions, analyze contradictory information, manage multiple tasks and activities concurrently and make sound recommendations as required;
  • Training and experience in crisis prevention and intervention;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting;
  • Current Driver's License (Ontario) - Class G
  • First Aid and CPR certificates;
  • Eligible to work in Canada.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Gentle Persuasive Approaches training within last 4 years;
  • Knowledge of non-pharmacological strategies to manage behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia;
  • Knowledge of the regional health care system in the area of geriatrics and mental health;
  • Ability to provide written consultation and plan for care for identified behavioural concerns;
  • Demonstrate ability to assess patient and family's learning needs and ability/experience in planning appropriate teaching;
  • Recent experience in supporting education for frontline staff through role modelling, coaching and mentoring;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft software programs (e.g. Excel, Word, Outlook);
  • Proficiency in English and French - oral expression (advanced level) and comprehension (advanced level).
