Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Student Services, District Principal, and the School Administrator, with the direction of the Counselor, the Youth Care Worker provides support to students and their families with a focus on the development of constructive student social attitudes, intervention counseling, understanding of emotions and skills to help manage emotions and life skills training. The job requires that changes be recommended to established methods or procedures. Work involves a choice of methods or procedures or sequence of operations. Teamwork and collegiality are essential components of the position.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides one-on-one support. Crisis intervention and life skills training with individual students, families and groups. Prepare programs and discharge plans, and provide follow up care
  • Supports and assists in the transition and inclusion of students into local school programs
  • Collaborates and participates in professional development, staff meetings, school-based team, interdisciplinary case conferences, care team meetings, and other meetings as required
  • Collaborates and participates in the development of support strategies within an integrative team and assist in the design, planning and evaluation of student’s IEPs, as required
  • Provides and/or arranges for interventions as appropriate for referred and non-referred students in crisis
  • Involvement in integrated case management; perform research and case assessments, and complete related reports
  • Collects information about students through interviews, case history, observational techniques, and the review of psychological assessments; evaluate information to identify issues, and determine correct process or refer to other agencies
  • Participates, plans, coordinates or evaluates a variety of student programs, and organizes special events and information sessions
  • Maintains a working knowledge and refer to community services, resources and supports for children and their families.
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports for legal action, provides evidence in court
  • Investigates and follows up with individual groups, regarding student’s safety and well being
  • Consults with various Ministry or outside agencies
  • Collaborates and communicates with care givers student plans and process/adjustments to the plan student plan alongside counselor
  • Supports students in understanding emotions and collaboratively, with student, provides support and strategies to help manage emotions
  • Organizes and provides group support to students in various areas (anxiety, social skills, life skills, emotional regulation and so on)
  • Assists outside partner groups to support students currently living in supported independent living residences or in foster care under a youth agreement contract
  • Encourages healthy lifestyle choices i.e. personal hygiene, good nutrition, physical fitness, sexual health, and lifestyle modification in the prevention and recovery of substance abuse
  • Organizes presentations for the school population or specific classes on various facets of healthy living
  • Supports and advocates for students accessing medical services
  • Provides behavioural information to staff regarding support for students
  • Tracks student progress and attendance
  • Follows up to determine reliability and validity of treatment used; makes recommendations regarding modification to services and service delivery
  • Assists in the planning and supervision of recreational activities
  • Supervises students at the school or on field trips or on approved skill and recreational activities
  • Monitors and supervises students who are involved in work experience placement at the secondary level alternate programs
  • Performs other related duties as may reasonably be expected of a person in this position

Required Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 graduation
  • Diploma in Social Services, Child & Youth Care Certification or other related program
  • Current First Aid certificate
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 driver’s license; a driver’s abstract to be provided annually

Required Experience:

  • A minimum of two (2) years relevant experience including working with at-risk students

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain professionalism, ethical behaviour and confidentiality
  • Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate good public relations skills
  • Understanding and knowledge of child development, family dynamics, community resources and a range of intervention techniques
  • Understanding of Indigenous Knowledge, ways of being and Principles of Learning
  • Ability to positively contribute to the calls for action for Truth and Reconciliation, specifically as it pertains to schools and families
  • Ability to work positively and effectively with a variety of parents/caregivers, children, volunteers, personnel, professionals, community members, and the general public
  • Ability to be flexible within assigned weekly hours and work with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of social work or psychiatric principles, techniques and practices and their application to casework, group, and community problems and an understanding of the laws and regulations governing those systems
  • A broad knowledge of social behavioural issues and ability to provide appropriate support in these areas
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops to classes, staff, or community members
  • Ability to engage in assigned tasks, work with minimal supervision
  • Training and/or experience in the use of computers at a level appropriate to the position
  • Knowledge and training in trauma informed practice

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of school district operations, policies, and procedure
