Position Overview About the Role Our Parks Department is seeking safety-conscious, reliable team players who enjoy hands-on work with a sense of accomplishment. We offer seasonal opportunities for temporary full-time and auxiliary labourers. These positions offer hands-on training and experience in park maintenance and operations, including landscaping, irrigation, equipment use, habitat restoration, and more. This experience can serve as a stepping stone to other opportunities within the District.
Labourers are initially assigned to a crew within one of six teams (Horticulture, Turf, Carpentry, Trails and Natural Areas, Arboriculture or Construction) but may work in any area as needed. They will perform diverse tasks in District Parks, including sports field and turf grass maintenance; equipment operation; trail and infrastructure construction and maintenance; ecological restoration and invasive species management, horticulture and landscape maintenance; road median work; street tree watering and related work as required. Additionally, they can be responsible for litter picking in parks, cleaning and restocking washrooms, ensuring access to public buildings, patrolling parks, and maintaining records and reports.
The successful applicant must possess:
Qualifications We are looking for people that have a high school diploma and some experience in general parks maintenance, gardening and construction work, or have an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence and an abstract that reflects a safe driving record is required.
Details Salary: The pay rate for this unionized position is $33.26 per hour (2024 rates) Hours of Work: 40 hour work week

- The physical and mental aptitude to work on a crew and learn new skills;
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in performing routine maintenance and construction tasks, such as maintaining and constructing grounds, buildings, shrub beds, trees, and natural areas vegetation;
- The ability to receive and carry out oral and written instruction and exercise some independent judgement;
- Skill in operating power and hand tools used in the work, such as a cultivator, leaf blower, power equipment, power mowers and power saw;
- The ability to deal courteously with the public;
- Physical strength, stamina and coordination for heavy manual work in all types of weather.
