C2627-07 CASA Classroom Teacher
CASA Classrooms have partnered with NLPS to deliver clinical intervention and individualized programming in a local classroom setting to address the need for intensive mental health services in Cold Lake at Art Smith Aviation Academy. The learning environment will bridge a child’s mental health and academic needs through a comprehensive and coordinated approach by a mental health team and a classroom teacher.
Students must be referred by their school division, and will be assessed for eligibility and suitability for this program. There will be group therapy, individual therapy, and psychiatric care built into the structure of the school day. The classroom will be supported by a teacher, Mental Health Therapist and a Mental Health Aide, with access to a team of wrap around services.
The instructional focus will be individualized and focus on literacy and numeracy skill building. Students will be accepted from the grade range of grades 5-8. The goal is to support students in their mental wellness to transition back to a regular classroom settings.
Students from grades 5-8 will be accepted at this time and will include up to 12 students.
This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) temporary position commencing at the beginning of October 2026 and for the remainder of the 2026-2027 school year. Art Smith Aviation Academy is located on the 4 Wing Air Force Base in the City of Cold Lake with approximately 290 students in Kindergarten to Grade 9. Art Smith Aviation Academy provides a K to 9 program in English and K to 6 French Immersion program to all families in the Cold Lake area. The school takes pride in being able to focus on the specialized needs of military dependents while supporting students of the area surrounding 4 Wing Cold Lake.
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Education
- Previous teaching experience of at least five (5) years
- Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team is an asset
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills
- Excellent understand of assessment needs at an individual level
- Experience in creating Individual Program Plans for complex student needs
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to adapt to changing classroom dynamics and student needs
- Compassion and understanding when working with students with mental health challenges
- Training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) or equivalent
- Knowledge of best practices in special education and mental health
- Ability to build strong relationships with parents
Key responsibilities include
- Curriculum development: Design and implement lesson plans tailored to a multigrade classroom, considering the unique needs and learning styles of students with mental health diagnoses
- Collaboration: Work closing with a multidisciplinary team that includes a mental health therapist, a therapy support assistant, and other educators to create a cohesive support system for students
- Classroom Management: Maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive classroom environment, ensuring the well-being and emotional safety of all students.
- Individualized Instruction: Provide individualized and small-group instruction to meet the diverse educational needs of students, accommodating various learning levels and emotional states.
- Transition Planning: Collaborate with students' home schools to create transition plans for students returning after a 5-month period in your classroom. This includes organizing transition meetings and coordinating with the home school community.
- Communication: Regularly communicate with parents, caregivers, and other stakeholders to provide updates on student progress and collaborate on strategies for success.
- Professional Development: Stay current with best practices in education, mental health, and classroom management, and participate in ongoing professional development.
