Personal Support Worker at CareQuilt
About the Client
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for an 80-year-old woman who recently experienced a stroke. While she was fortunate to avoid physical paralysis or speech difficulties, the stroke has affected her vision—she has lost peripheral vision on her left side. She lives independently in a condo but now requires daily support as she adjusts to these changes. She's a strong-willed, talkative woman who values her independence but needs supervision for safety. She had a heart attack two years ago and has been resistant to lifestyle changes, though recent events have made care necessary. She speaks English fluently but is a native Gujarati speaker, and having a caregiver who speaks Gujarati or Hindi would significantly improve comfort and connection.
Responsibilities
- Medication management: Ensure medications from blister packs are taken twice daily (around noon and 7 PM)
- Mobility support: Supervise use of walker and assist with safe navigation around the home
- Personal care supervision: Be present during bathing and hygiene activities to prevent falls
- Light housekeeping: Help tidy the home to reduce clutter and improve safety
- Meal preparation: Assist with or prepare meals, ideally working together in the kitchen as cooking is important to her
- Companionship: Engage in conversation and encourage light physical activity like 15-minute walks in the building's indoor track
- Safety monitoring: Watch for falls and confusion related to post-stroke delirium
- Coordinate with OT and other health services as they begin home visits
