POSITION SUMMARY
Hours of work: 35 hours per week (1.0 FTE) Tuesday to Saturday, 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Under the general direction of the Manager, Early Learning & Childcare, the Mobile Parent–Tot Community Navigator supports families with children from birth to six years of age by delivering inclusive, community-based early learning programming through the BEAR bus program. This role focuses on parent–child interaction, early learning experiences, and connecting families to community resources. Programming reflects and respects the diverse cultures of Abbotsford. Programming includes evenings, weekends, and community-based locations, including driving and operating the BEAR bus.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Facilitate the BEAR programming using a play-based, relationship-focused approach.
- Plan and lead developmentally appropriate activities supporting early learning and caregiver–child interaction.
- Create welcoming, safe, and inclusive environments for children and caregivers.
- Connect families to community resources and support as needed.
- Drive and operate a Recreational Vehicle (RV) named the BEAR Bus to designated community locations.
- Maintain accurate attendance records, reports, and documentation.
- Collaborate with school district staff and community partners.
- Sweeping, cleaning and maintaining the interior of the vehicle
- Set up and take down of the program materials and exhibits
- Daily Pre and Post trip inspections
- Maintain confidentiality and follow district safety and workplace policies.
- Undertaking other related duties as assigned consistent with this position.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Grade 12 diploma, or equivalent, supplemented by the completion of a diploma or certificate in a related field, Mother Goose training is preferred. And a valid Food Safe and Child Safe First Aid certificate is also required or willingness to obtain. Minimum 2 years’ experience working in early learning, childcare, family support, or related community-based services. Experience delivering Parent & Tot or family-focused programming is an asset. Community development and outreach experience, including working with community partners and supporting families is an asset. Experience working with
diverse families and communities in Abbotsford is an asset. Experience with mobile or outreach-based service delivery is an asset. A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License. As well, incumbents also require the following:
- Strong knowledge of early childhood development and the BC Early Learning Framework.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organization, documentation, and reporting skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Commitment to inclusive, respectful, family-centered practice.
- Proven ability to use Microsoft Office programs, internet and internet-based programs, with the ability to learn other software programs;
- Proven ability to determine, judge and select appropriate courses of action in accordance with established policies and procedures;
- Understanding and awareness of cultural diversity;
- Proven ability to multi-task, prioritize, self-motivate, and meet deadlines;
- Proven ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and to provide service and relationship to the public and School District in a professional, respectful, positive and courteous manner;
- Proven ability to establish and maintain positive, effective work relationships in a team environment at all times;
- Proven ability to use tact and discretion and maintain confidentiality in matters pertaining to the School District;
- Working knowledge of WHMIS and WorkSafe BC occupational health and safety regulations and the demonstrated ability to work in a manner that recognizes personal safety and the safety of others;
- Ability to be flexible, adaptable and resilient to change;
- Ability to explain complex or simple instructions or information clearly to others;
- Proven ability to provide highly accurate data entry with attention to detail;
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
