We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Coordinator to support operations throughout the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB). This role is responsible for promoting a strong safety culture, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing safety programs, conducting incident investigations, delivering training, and supporting operational requirements related to safety, fleet, PPE, and site administration.

The successful candidate will serve as the primary safety resource for the region and work closely with leadership, employees, subcontractors, and clients to ensure all work is completed safely and in compliance with company, customer, and legislative requirements.

This position is based in Fort McMurray, Alberta, and candidates must be local to the region. The role requires regular travel to customer and project sites throughout the RMWB, including support at remote locations requiring overnight camp accommodations and extended site stays as operationally required.

Key Responsibilities

Site Safety Leadership & Compliance

  • Act as the primary safety resource for RMWB operations.
  • Develop, implement, and administer site-specific safety and regulatory processes.
  • Conduct field observations, inspections, and compliance monitoring activities.
  • Perform regular audits of work practices, safe job procedures, policies, and standards to ensure legislative and site compliance.
  • Participate in EHS meetings, Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings, risk assessments, and safety reviews.
  • Identify safety trends and provide recommendations for continuous improvement to leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with customer, company, and regulatory safety requirements.

Incident Management & Investigation

  • Manage incident reporting processes, including creation and administration of required Enablon events.
  • Monitor and complete action management requirements arising from incidents, hazards, and observations.
  • Lead incident and accident investigations, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate records of incidents, WCB claims, safety statistics, and KPI reporting.
  • Communicate lessons learned and safety improvements resulting from incidents and investigations.
  • Administer and audit Alcohol & Drug (A&D) program requirements in accordance with legislation and customer expectations.

Training & Development

  • Conduct safety orientations for new employees and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate, deliver, and monitor required safety training and certifications.
  • Prepare and present toolbox talks, safety meetings, and daily safety communications.
  • Participate in company-wide Joint Health & Safety Committee initiatives.
  • Maintain professional certifications and pursue ongoing professional development opportunities.

Program Management & Documentation

  • Develop, implement, and maintain HSE programs and procedures.
  • Review and maintain hazard assessments, inspections, and other safety documentation.
  • Ensure all safety records and documentation are accurate, organized, and current.
  • Support annual COR audit activities and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain and update site-specific safety plans, procedures, and contract documentation.
  • Manage PPE inventories, inspections, certifications, and distribution.
  • Monitor PPE market trends, recalls, and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Coordinate fleet maintenance and vehicle compliance requirements.
  • Manage company apparel and related inventory programs.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field preferred.
  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO), Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), or equivalent designation considered an asset.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of health and safety experience in industrial, construction, maintenance, or oil sands environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation and industry best practices.
  • Experience conducting incident investigations, audits, inspections, and safety training.
  • Experience with COR audits and safety management systems.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and safety management software platforms.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean driving record.
