Commercial Lines Property & Casualty Underwriter

Location: Guildford, Surrey, BC Salary: $65,000 – $85,000 per year Schedule: Monday – Friday (37.5 hours/week) Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

The Role

As a Commercial Lines Property & Casualty Underwriter at Schill Insurance, you’ll play a key role in evaluating and underwriting commercial risks for our in-house programs. Working closely with Account Managers, clients, and insurer partners, you’ll assess submissions, determine eligibility, and make sound underwriting decisions that support profitable growth and long-term client relationships.

This role is ideal for an experienced Commercial Underwriter who enjoys balancing risk assessment with customer service and thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

Underwriting & Risk Assessment

  • Underwrite new and renewal business in accordance with company guidelines and program appetites.
  • Evaluate submissions to determine eligibility, acceptability, and pricing recommendations.
  • Analyze risks to support profitable premium growth and portfolio performance.
  • Apply underwriting judgment while balancing risk acceptance and profitability objectives.
  • Maintain complete and accurate underwriting documentation and policy records.

Portfolio Management

  • Review and assess renewal business while supporting retention goals
  • Monitor underwriting results and contribute to a profitable portfolio
  • Maintain a strong understanding of commercial insurance products and coverage wordings
  • Ensure policy data remains accurate, complete, and up to date

Client & Team Support

  • Collaborate with Account Managers and internal teams to provide underwriting expertise and guidance
  • Respond to underwriting inquiries and requests in a prompt, professional manner
  • Provide technical advice, recommendations, and mentoring to team members as needed
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders

Collaboration & Professional Development

  • Work effectively toward team goals and business objectives
  • Stay current on industry trends, insurance products, and underwriting best practices
  • Continuously develop technical knowledge and underwriting expertise
  • Support special projects and other duties as assigned by the Underwriting Manager

What You Bring

Must-Haves

  • Level 1 General Insurance License
  • Minimum 3-5 years of Commercial Underwriting experience
  • Strong knowledge of Commercial Property & Casualty coverages and products
  • Solid understanding of underwriting and pricing principles
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Nice-to-Have

  • Prior MGA or Lloyd’s underwriting experience
  • Level 2 General Insurance License
  • Experience with Policy Works and/or EPIC broker management systems
