SUPERVISOR – GENERAL TRADES
DEPARTMENT: Facility Services
REPORTS TO: Facility Director
SALARY RANGE: $87,391.00 - $109,239.00
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Facility Services, this position is responsible for the supervision and management of employees engaged in specific trades such as carpentry, painting, locksmith, utility persons (MOG), shipping/receiving and millwrighting. The Supervisor of General Trades takes a leadership role in managing ongoing maintenance, new installations and upgrades to deliver safe and well maintained schools and other facilities for students, staff, tenants and the public.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervision of staff, direct work, establish priorities, and coordinates the day to day operations
- Liaise with school administration to address concerns and to maintain safe and reliable facilities
- Assist with the preparation of plans, specifications and other bid documents for minor construction projects
- In consultation with the Director and others – ensures relevant regulatory requirements are met
- Ensure that all work is carried out in a safe and efficient manner and compliant applicable regulation and policies
- Monitors operating budgets and provides input and assistance in the planning and budgeting processes
- Tracks, analyzes and provides input to improve key maintenance parameters such as work requests, time to complete, operating costs, purchasing processes and maintenance costs
- Coordinates and directs external service providers and consultants for a variety of disciplines
- Assists in the recruitment, performance evaluation and development of staff
- May act as a representative on the Labour/management Committee or other committees as assigned
- Flexibility to respond to after-hours emergent situations and attend to situations as required;
- Occasionally works outside of traditional office hours to supervise employees and contract service providers
- Reviews employee attendance and performance and, where necessary, takes positive action for improvement.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, tools, equipment and practices relevant to facility operations and construction
- Thorough knowledge of carpentry, painting and millwrighting
- Strong skills in the use of computer software including MS Word, MS Excel, maintenance management and building automation systems
- Demonstrated experience in hiring, evaluating and directing employees in a unionized environment
- Ability to effectively and efficiently plan, organize and manage workloads and projects, set priorities, meet deadlines and work under pressure
- Proven ability to make decisions in crisis situations using critical thinking skills and analytical problem solving
- Ability travel within the school district outlying facility locations
- Demonstrated ability to communicate both orally and in writing
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain respectful and cooperative working relationships and to communicate effectively with staff, co-workers, and partner groups at all levels.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will possess:
- Grade 12 High School Diploma
- Valid BC or Interprovincial qualification in a relevant trade, or diploma in building technology, facility management, engineering degree or other appropriate designation
- Minimum of five years of supervisory experience in a unionized environment, including supervising tradespersons involved in facility operations and construction
- Hold and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver's License
The successful candidate will be required to complete a criminal record check.
