The Opportunity

The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting for Transit Operators to fill five (5) permanent part-time positions. Under the general direction of the Senior Operations Supervisor – Conventional Bus, the Transit Operator operates public transit vehicles on prescribed and other routing, ensuring schedule adherence and the comfort and safety of passengers. Carry out driving duties in accordance with highway traffic act regulations and the Transit Bus Policy Manual as it relates to driver responsibilities and passenger assistance.

Top Key Responsibilities

  • Safe and Effective Transit Vehicle Operation - Operate public transit vehicles on assigned routes and schedules. Provide multiple types of service, including fixed route, charter, school specials, overloads, and any other required vehicle movements. Prioritize passenger comfort, safety, and adherence to transit schedules.
  • Passenger Monitoring & Safety - Observe passenger behavior to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all riders. Report incidents and request supervisor assistance when needed. Submit clear incident information for follow-up and documentation.
  • Fare Collection & Customer Interaction - Oversee fare payment, issue and collect transfers, and ensure proper fare procedures are followed. Address non-payment respectfully and professionally. Document and report all fare-related incidents to supervisors.
  • Equipment Knowledge & Safety Management - Maintain thorough knowledge of all transit equipment operated. Safely operate assigned vehicles and equipment at all times. Report mechanical issues or defects to supervisors promptly so repairs or vehicle change-offs can be completed.
  • Non Driving Operational Duties - Perform light maintenance and cleaning duties during non-driving periods. Complete pickups, deliveries, and other assigned service-related tasks as required.

As our preferred candidate, you will have

  • Completed Grade 12
  • Minimum of 1 to 2 years of commercial driving experience is desirable.
  • Must hold a minimum of a class 2 Alberta Operators License with a Q endorsement.
  • Must have a knowledge of basic traffic laws and regulations pertaining to local by-laws and the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Must have the ability to maintain effective customer relations with transit patrons and the public.
  • Must have the ability to maintain effective working relations with other staff members, supervisors, and management.
  • Must have the ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment in a variety of traffic and emergency situations.
  • Must have the ability to understand instructions and effectively communicate orally or in writing.
  • Completion of a First Aid course and Defensive Driving course is desirable.
  • Will be required to work in a variety of weather conditions and close contact with the public.
  • Adherence to levels of service achieved will be performed under the scrutiny of transit patrons, the public and supervisory staff.

Remuneration: $31.62 to $35.13 per hour

Hours of Work: Up to 80 hours biweekly, with no minimum guarantee of hours; successful applicants must maintain availability between 4:00 am and 12:00 am on scheduled working days
