This role offers the opportunity to shape and advance patient engagement and patient- and family-centred care at a system level across AHS. As a Senior Consultant within the Quality Health Improvement portfolio, you will influence strategy and drive provincially coordinated initiatives that embed patient experience into organizational practice. Working in close partnership with leaders, physicians, and frontline teams, you will lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of complex engagement initiatives, develop education and curriculum, and enable sustainable change across a large, complex healthcare system. With a high degree of autonomy, you will guide strategic direction, support operationalization, and ensure alignment with AHS values, priorities, and quality improvement goals.

The Engagement and Patient Experience (EPE) Senior Consultant is a key strategic role within the Quality Health Improvement (QHI) portfolio, accountable for advancing patient engagement and patient- and family-centred care practices across Alberta Health Services (AHS). Reporting to the Director of Accreditation and Engagement & Patient Experience, this position provides advanced consultation to leaders, physicians, and staff. This position plays a critical leadership role in the design, implementation, and evaluation of provincially coordinated engagement and patient experience initiatives. The role supports the integration of patient and family-centred care principles into organizational practices by leading complex initiatives, developing education and curriculum, and enabling sustainable change across a large, complex healthcare system. The EPE Senior Consultant works with a high degree of independence, guiding strategy, supporting operationalization, and ensuring alignment with AHS values, priorities, and quality improvement objectives. This role is critical in supporting AHS to strengthen patient experience and engagement by: Leading the design and implementation of provincial strategies, initiatives, and frameworks. Providing expert consultation and guidance alongside patient family advisors, operational leaders, and clinical teams. Developing and delivering education, tools, and resources to advance patient-centred care. Supporting evaluation, continuous improvement, and sustainability of engagement practices. Building strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including patients and families. This position requires strong leadership, facilitation, engagement, and change management expertise, along with the ability to work collaboratively across a complex, province-wide health system.

Required Qualifications

Graduate degree in health, leadership, education, or related field. Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in a healthcare environment, including experience in patient engagement, staff development, and/or education. Demonstrated expertise in: Patient and family-centred care principles. Change management, facilitation, quality improvement methodology, stakeholder consultation, and engagement. Leading through influence and strategic and operational planning. Education and curriculum development. Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence and engage diverse audiences. Demonstrated ability to lead complex initiatives and work effectively in a large, matrixed organization.

Additional Required Qualifications

Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered. This position is provincial in scope and works collaboratively across clinical, operational, and corporate teams. The role requires a high level of independence, judgment, and diplomacy when working with diverse stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s-level academic preparation in healthcare, administration, education, or related discipline. Experience in quality improvement, patient safety, and organizational transformation initiatives. Project management certification or equivalent experience. Membership in relevant healthcare or quality improvement organizations.
