Job Profile
The City of Cambridge has a temporary opening for a Wellness, Health and Safety Coordinator available immediately. This role provides advice, education, and support to all levels of staff in the Organization related to health, safety and wellness. The position has corporate accountability for Occupational Wellness Health & Safety programs and supports the organization in the development and on-going improvement of its Wellness Health and Safety program, including the Early and Safe Return to work program. Using your expertise and demonstrated experience in evaluation, assessment and interpreting legislative requirements, you will be responsible for recommending solutions, supporting a strong Internal Responsibility System and compliance with all applicable legislation to continuously improve workplace wellness, health and safety.
What you will be doing
The role supports the development, implementation, and execution of corporate wellness, health, and safety programs to foster a culture of safety and well-being. Key responsibilities include:
Disability Case management
- Administers responsibilities involving the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board and WSIA including facilitation/support in the WSIB Appeals process
- Supports the Early and Safe Return to Work Program for occupational and non-occupational injuries/accidents and liaises with supervisors and employees regarding lost time, modified work and medical clearance requirements as required.
- Responsible for case management of employees off work due to non-occupational and occupational illnesses and injuries, consults with Manager of Human Resources as required.
Health and Safety
- Conducts assessment or investigation of safety concerns, identifies hazards, risks and control recommendations to improve safety.
- Acts as a resource to the three (3) Joint Health & Safety Committees, including participating in bi-monthly meetings and provides consultation, direction as required.
- Provide consultation, guidance and support in the completion of workplace accident/incident investigations to determine root cause, and oversee the recommendations to prevent a reoccurrence optimizing workplace health and safety.
- Analyzes statistics and researches trends in best practice to identify trends/high risk areas to focus on greatest loss potentials.
- Interprets information, assesses compliance with legislation, regulations, policies and standards and provides guidance and support related to health and safety matters.
- Advises management on health and safety legislation and interpretation/application into the workplace.
- Participates in task forces/working groups as subject matter expert as situations require, consulting with Manger of Human Resources where necessary.
Administrative
- Maintain injury and accident statistics and documentation of files i.e. case management as appropriate, run regular reports on claim summaries, list of incidents, review dates, utilization, etc.
- Coordinate inspections, investigations, and occupational safety activities with departments.
Programs and Compliance
- Assists with the development and implementation of corporate wellness, health & safety programs, and policies to support a strong culture of safety and wellbeing.
- Works with all levels of management to develop and update safe work practices.
- Consults and conducts assessments/audits; researches, develops, implements/maintains and evaluates OH&S programs/procedures; recommends continuous improvement initiatives.
- Plans, designs, facilitates, reviews effectiveness of and/or delivers corporate wellness, health safety training/learning opportunities for staff, based on OH&S needs and/ or legislative requirements.
- Coordinates and oversees the corporate wellness program and staff committee. Supports the Corporate Mental Health Program.
- Promotes, communicates, and advises management on the Occupational Health & Safety Act and applicable regulations and corporate health and safety policies.
Education
Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Occupational Health & Safety, or equivalent.
Extensive knowledge of the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations, Ontario Human Rights Code, Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development Regulations for Health and Safety, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act and other application legislations.
Certification in one of the following is an asset: Certified Occupational Health Nurse, Certified Disability Management Specialist, Certified Return to Work Coordinator, or Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP).
Experience and Knowledge
Minimum of three (3) years' experience in Occupational Health in similar role, preferably in a municipal environment.
Excellent written and oral comprehension and expression.

Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training certificate from the Ministry of Labour. (may be obtained post offer)
Your compensation
This position is within Grade 4 of the Non-Union Salary Schedule and has an annual salary range of $86,756 to $105,802. We offer a comprehensive benefit package and are an Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) employer.
Hours of work
Hours of Work are Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Evenings and weekends may be required due to operational needs.
