The Role
This Driver Labourer position reports to the Supervisor, Fleet Operations and is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of City of Kingston Transit buses
Meet your department...
We manage the City’s corporate assets and vehicle fleet to ensure reliability, efficiency, and long-term sustainability. Our team oversees maintenance, lifecycle planning, and strategic investments that keep operations running smoothly and services on the move.
What You'll Do...
Replace or replenish fuel, oil, grease and coolant in transit buses
Clean the inside and outside of transit buses
Change light bulbs and windshield wipers
Start engines using booster if required and clean parts
Assist mechanical staff when required
Use safe work practices at all times as per the Occupational Health & Safety Act and City policies
Maintain daily work order forms, time sheets and fuel dip records both manually and electronically
Work in a safe and efficient manner, reporting any deficiencies or unsafe situations and conditions to the Supervisor
General housekeeping and maintenance of transit premises
Night Shift Duties
- Sweep floors, including bays and parts room nightly
- Wipe down benches, air hoses and light cords nightly
- Clear snow away from main doors and garage doors as required
Empty garbage nightly
Empty steel bin weekly
Drive vehicles in and out of shop as required by the mechanic
Other duties as assigned
To qualify, you'll need...
High School (Grade 12) diploma or equivalent
Valid Class 'G' driver’s license with a satisfactory driver’s abstract. Passing of 'DZ' driving evaluation upgrade is required within probationary period. 'DZ' license is an asset
Two (2) years’ experience working with Fleet vehicles (i.e. buses, dump trucks, plow equipment, refuse vehicles or loaders/excavators)
Must meet the requirements of “Competent Person” as defined in the Occupational Health & Safety Act
Must demonstrate corporate values of Belonging, Collaboration, Accountability, and Innovation
Must demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude toward machinery in general
Must be willing to work any and/or all shifts as required
Ability to interact with the public in a polite manner
Basic understanding of computer software is preferred
Ability to operate equipment and machinery in a safe and efficient manner
Ability to work in a team environment and use effective communication skills both verbal and written
Work with limited supervision
Ability to work outside in inclement weather conditions and perform all duties in a safe and efficient manner
Thorough knowledge and the ability to operate equipment and machinery in a safe and efficient manner
Able to perform the essential duties of the job
Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory criminal records check
