Director of Finance And Operations at Royal University Hospital Foundation
Objective and Scope
The Director of Finance and Operations is responsible for the RUH Foundation’s overall financial stewardship, ensuring strong financial management, transparency, and accountability in support of the Foundation’s mission.
This role combines hands-on financial oversight with strategic leadership. The Director remains closely connected to day-to-day accounting processes while also contributing at the governance and leadership levels. As part of a unified leadership team across Finance, Development, and Communications, this role supports the organization’s strategic planning and long-term sustainability.
Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Finance plays a key role in translating financial information into clear insights that support both the Board of Directors’ and the Finance & Audit Committee’s operational and strategic priorities.
Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Reporting
- Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes
- Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reporting, including variance analysis and cash flow projections
- Oversee month-end and year-end processes
- Maintain the integrity of financial systems, controls, and reporting practices
- Present financial results and insights to the CEO, Finance & Audit Committee, and Board of Directors
- Support strategic decision-making through clear, timely financial analysis
Day-to-Day Financial Oversight
- Maintain close oversight of day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial records
- Oversee key processes including reconciliations, general ledger integrity, and transaction-level review
- Step into detailed financial work when required to maintain continuity and accuracy
Fund Accounting & Compliance
- Oversee fund accounting, including donor-restricted and endowment funds
- Ensure compliance with donor intent, CRA regulations, and applicable accounting standards
- Prepare and submit required regulatory filings, including the annual charitable return (T3010)
- Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Support risk management practices to safeguard assets and ensure compliance
Audit, Investments & External Relationships
- Lead the annual audit process and act as the primary liaison with the accounting firm
- Maintain relationships with external investment managers
- Oversee investment tracking and reporting in alignment with Foundation policies
- Monitor cash flow and support financial stability and planning
Governance & Board Engagement
- Prepare and present financial reporting for Finance & Audit Committee and Board meetings (quarterly and as required)
- Translate complex financial information into clear, accessible insights for non-financial stakeholders
- Support the CEO and Board in financial governance, planning, and decision-making
- Contribute to long-term financial planning and organizational strategy
Team Leadership & Operations
- Lead and support a small finance team, including:
- Gift shop / retail operations
- Granting and fund distribution
- Part-time finance processor
- Set priorities, delegate effectively, and ensure alignment across team responsibilities
- Foster a collaborative, respectful, and accountable team environment
- Support cross-functional collaboration with Development and Communications
Systems & Process Improvement
- Oversee financial systems and database, including donor and fundraising systems
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, reporting, and operational efficiency
- Ensure financial practices effectively support fundraising operations and donor stewardship
Requirements
Education and Experience
- Post-secondary degree in Finance with a CPA designation
- Progressive financial experience, including leadership responsibilities
- Experience managing audits and working with external accounting firms
- Experience working in a not-for-profit environment is preferred
- Familiarity with donor management or fundraising systems is an asset

Compensation
- $91,000 to $151,000.00
