A typical day for the Payroll Team Lead
- Lead and support the delivery of full-cycle payroll for semi-monthly and off-cycle payroll groups, ensuring all transactions are processed accurately and on time.
- Supervise, coach, and support payroll staff by assigning work, providing guidance, and fostering a high standard of service and accountability.
- Review and approve payroll calculations, adjustments, deductions, overtime, taxable benefits, and off-cycle payments.
- Ensure compliance with payroll legislation, organizational policies, procedures, and collective agreement provisions.
- Oversee employee leave administration, including general illness leave, vacation, personal leave, long-term disability, maternity leave, and WCB.
- Administer pension and benefits processes, including eligibility, enrolments, changes, terminations, remittances, reporting, and year-end activities.
- Maintain payroll data integrity in Dayforce, support system updates, and work closely with the HRIS Analyst on reporting and process improvements.
- Prepare payroll, tax, benefits, and finance-related reports, and support internal and external audit requirements.
- Act as a key point of contact for payroll-related inquiries and resolve issues with professionalism, accuracy, and sound judgment.
- Identify and improve payroll processes, strengthen controls, and enhance service delivery.
What you bring
- University degree with five or more years of directly related experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Payroll designation such as PCP or CPM.
- Progressive payroll experience in a large, complex and unionized environment, including full-cycle payroll processing and payroll leadership responsibilities.
- Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, collective agreements, payroll best practices, and statutory reporting requirements.
- Experience administering payroll in Dayforce or a comparable payroll/HRIS system, with strong systems and reporting capability.
- Strong supervisory, organizational, and time management skills, with the ability to lead day-to-day operations and support team success.
- Well-developed communication, consulting, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, supported by sound judgment and a strong service focus.
- Ability to interpret legislation and business requirements, influence decisions, mitigate risk, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and confidence working across payroll, HR, and finance stakeholders.
