Overview
The Accessibility Advisor supports students in accessing academic accommodations at Lakehead University. The role reviews documentation to determine appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities, provides ongoing academic support, and promotes awareness of accessibility services through presentations and outreach activities. The Accessibility Advisor arranges training and bursary information for students requiring assistive technology and liaises with university departments, faculty members, medical practitioners, and accessibility offices at other post-secondary institutions as needed to support student success.
Responsibilities
Academic Accommodation Services
- Review and assess disability-related documentation to determine appropriate academic accommodations.
- Meet with students to discuss accommodation needs and develop individualized accommodation plans.
- Prepare and distribute accommodation documentation to faculty members.
- Consult with faculty regarding accommodation implementation and address accommodation-related concerns.
- Attend feedback sessions with psychologists and other professionals as required.
- Explain accommodation processes, expectations, and responsibilities to students.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records within the accommodation database, ensuring all information is handled in accordance with privacy legislation and institutional confidentiality standards.
- Communicate policies, procedures, and dispute resolution processes to students when required.
Assistive Technology Support
- Provide information and guidance regarding assistive technology available to students with disabilities.
- Coordinate access to assistive technology training and support services.
- Facilitate referrals for students eligible for disability-related funding and bursary programs.
- Participate in training, demonstrations, and professional development activities related to assistive technology.
Student Advising and Support
- Provide ongoing support and advising to students with disabilities throughout their academic journey.
- Deliver guidance on time management, organization, study skills, and academic success strategies.
- Refer students to appropriate campus resources and support services when needed.
- Support students in arranging accommodated testing and examination requirements.
- Attend meetings with students, faculty, and other stakeholders as requested.
- Collaborate with university departments and external service providers to support student success and accessibility.
- Assist in identifying and addressing accessibility barriers within the university environment.
Outreach, Education, and Liaison
- Provide information to prospective students, current students, families, and secondary school educators regarding accessibility services and supports.
- Represent Student Accessibility Services at orientation programs, recruitment events, and other university functions.
- Deliver presentations and information sessions to students, staff, and community partners.
- Develop and distribute informational materials related to accessibility services, accommodations, and supports.
- Build and maintain relationships with secondary schools, post-secondary institutions, healthcare professionals, and community organizations to support student transitions and success.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, or a related field.
- Experience working with students with disabilities, preferably in a post-secondary environment.
- Experience reviewing and interpreting medical, psychological, and educational documentation to determine appropriate academic accommodations.
- Knowledge of accommodation practices, accessibility principles, and student support services.
- Familiarity with the Ontario Human Rights Code and its application to academic accommodations.
- Familiarity with university policies, procedures, and academic environments.
- Strong computer skills, including experience with databases and student information systems.
- Experience maintaining confidential student records and documentation.
- Familiarity with assistive technologies and accessibility software, such as Dragon NaturallySpeaking and Kurzweil, is considered an asset.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and external partners.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy and confidentiality.
