Communications Specialist at Nch’ḵay̓ Development Corporation

The Communications & Community Engagement Specialist (Term – 18 months) is responsible for supporting the execution and delivery of community engagement initiatives in alignment with Nch’ḵay̓’s approved community engagement strategy. This role provides hands-on coordination and implementation support for community-facing activities with the Squamish Nation community and external stakeholders, ensuring events, forums, and communications are delivered in a respectful, well-organized, and culturally appropriate manner.

This is a temporary position providing maternity leave coverage. The Specialist works closely with Brand, Marketing & Community Engagement team, internal, and external partners to support quarterly reporting, storytelling, community events, and engagement initiatives, while gathering and sharing community feedback to help inform organizational decision-making.

This is a Term full-time (18 months) position.

Duties, Responsibilities, Authority, and Accountabilities

Writing, Editing & Content Development

  • Draft, edit, and proofread internal and external communications materials, including community newsletters, e-newsletters, fact sheets, posters, presentations, website content, and social media content.
  • Support marketing and community engagement campaigns through copywriting, content coordination, and distribution.
  • Assist with the development of corporate communications materials, including key messaging and briefing materials.
  • Provide basic graphic design support using approved brand templates.

Community Engagement Delivery

  • Coordinate and deliver community engagement activities in accordance with established engagement strategies and protocols.
  • Support the planning and execution of quarterly community updates, annual gatherings, and other community-facing initiatives.
  • Assist with organizing and facilitating community forums, presentations, special events, and volunteer activities.

Squamish Nation & External Engagement

  • Support respectful, consistent engagement with Squamish Nation community members, leadership, and internal Nation organizations.
  • Engage external stakeholders as required to support community events and initiatives.
  • Represent the organization at community events and meetings as assigned.
  • Coordinate volunteers and provide on-the-ground support during engagement activities and events.
  • Collaborate closely with internal departments to ensure smooth delivery and alignment.
  • Support the preparation of materials and content for community events and updates.

Community Feedback & Insights

  • Collect and compile community input through surveys, focus groups, and other engagement tools.
  • Summarize key themes and insights for internal teams and leadership.
  • Support continuous improvement by incorporating feedback into future engagement activities.

Reporting & Administration

  • Track participation, engagement outcomes, and feedback metrics.
  • Lead analytics tracking, SEO optimization, and reporting.
  • Prepare summary reports following community events and initiatives for leadership review.
  • Maintain organized records of engagement activities and stakeholder interactions.

Public Enquiries

  • Support management of the Communications email inbox.
  • Respond to public enquiries or forward to appropriate departments in a timely manner.

Other

  • Perform other duties as required.

Reporting Responsibilities and Authorities from Supervisor

  • Reports to the Manager, Community Engagement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field. A two-year diploma or associate degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or a related discipline may be considered in combination with relevant experience.
  • Five to seven years of experience in communications, public relations, community engagement, or a related role, demonstrating progressive responsibility and leadership.
  • Experience coordinating events and engagement activities involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong project coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience using social media platforms at an organizational level to promote engagement initiatives.
  • Working knowledge of design tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite is considered an asset.
  • Experience shooting and editing video and photo content for social media is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build respectful relationships with community members and internal teams.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and ability to handle sensitive information confidentially.
  • Experience working with First Nations communities is considered an asset.
