Position Summary

Provides interpreting services between ASL and English for students (both Deaf and hearing), teachers, staff and other professionals at Loyalist College, the community, college events or placement agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support eligible students in the learning environment (classroom, lab, placement, etc.)
  • Facilitate student participation in and access to College services
  • Provide college community with interpretation for workshops upon request
  • Prepare for interpreting assignments by studying assignment related resources, networking with related professionals and establishing linguistically appropriate communication strategies
  • Consults with students, teachers and staff around the appropriate use of an interpreter; to assess and arrange interpreting environments for successful communication dynamics
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Completion of a 4 year post secondary education program or 3-year degree in ASL Interpreter Training Program with specialized, professional qualifications, or equivalency
  • 5 Years of professional experience
  • Experience interpreting in post-secondary environment
  • Intermediate to advanced skill in computers including meeting software e.g. Zoom and MS Teams
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and community impacts, issues and trends.
  • Knowledge of interpreting community best practices, trends and language skill set.
  • Working knowledge of AVLIC policies and guidelines
  • OIS Registration
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision; solid problem-solving skills. Demonstrated communication, collaboration, interpersonal and teamwork skills at a professional level
  • Demonstrated commitment to uphold the College’s priorities on diversity and equity.
